Jack Balsam's barmitzvah

The Immanuel College pupil enjoyed a star-studded barmitzvah celebration as his father Colin works in music management. Craig David and Travis were among the guests at the Dorchester party. Jack enjoys playing the guitar, piano and drums — and football for London Lions. There were barmitzvah ceremonies at the Western Wall in Jerusalem and at Edgware Synagogue

Simchah of the week: Benjamin and Jessica Rubens

The bar- and batmitzvah twins were born in Watford and now live in Bushey. Having attended Clore Shalom Primary, they are in their second year at Yavneh College. Benjamin is a keen footballer and Tottenham supporter and his prize possession is his new laptop computer. Jessica has a matching laptop, enjoys playing the guitar and loves shopping for new clothes

Orli was born and raised in Cambridge, studied law and management and is now people and development manager for Malmaison and Hotel du Vin (Scotland/Northern Ireland). Glasgow born and bred, Jeff studied engineering and works as a buyer for a Japanese company which makes parts for Honda. He has run the London, New York and Paris marathons in support of children’s charities. They married at Thompson’s Lane Synagogue, Cambridge and live in Newton Mearns, Glasgow

Simchah of the week: Sonja Stewart and Warren Bader

Sonja was raised in Renfrewshire and Warren in Benoni, South Africa.

She studied at Glasgow University gaining an MA (hons) in Hispanic studies, after which she taught English in Madrid.

She is now joint chief executive of the Sco-Fro food services group in Glasgow. Warren attended the University of Witwatersrand and worked as a producer of commercials and music videos in South Africa.
He is currently burial officer for Glasgow Hebrew Burial and Cathcart Hebrew Burial societies. They live in Pollokshields, Glasgow

The Hertfordshire batmitzvah girl is a student at Yavneh College and was batmitzvah at Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue. Lily raises money for Great Ormond Street Hospital by making and selling greetings cards

It was one of the last batmitzvahs that Rabbi Andrew Goldstein was officiating at before his retirement.

Miriam and Hannah Sanderson's batmitzvahs

The twins were batmitzvah at Harrow and Wembley Progressive Synagogue. Both are Watford Grammar pupils and BBYO members and have a puppy called Poppy and two goldfish - the latter a present after brother Joseph's barmitzvah four years ago. Their mother, Danielle, is an international distance runner who has represented Britain over 20 times and won Maccabiah gold during a long career

Simchah of the week: Miriam Bayfield and Jonni Berger

Miriam is principal rabbi of Finchley Reform Synagogue, having gained semichah from Leo Baeck College and a theology degree from Bristol University. Jonni is an employee-benefits tax consultant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and holds a degree in economics and social studies from Manchester University. The Exeter Synagogue barmitzvah boy was born in London but his family moved to Exmoor when he was eight weeks old. Jewish life in Exmoor was minimal and the Darvills relocated to Tiverton, near Exeter. His mother Ruth helped him to learn Hebrew, with support from Hendon Reform Synagogue's Rabbi Steven Katz and the local congregation. She enjoys music and is learning to play the piano. She last year raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research and Chai Cancer Care through a sponsored walk she organised with some school friends. She counts her main loves as art and music and has won school art competitions: one of her pictures was on the front of Moriah’s magazine. She made an MTV-style music video for her batmitzvah. She says: “It was great fun, but I was surprised how long it took to do.”
