Go veggie - get a book

The Jewish Vegetarian Society is offering an incentive to meat-eaters to try a veggie diet for a month or more.

JVS executive director Suzanne Barnard says the first 100 non-vegetarians to take the pledge will be sent a copy of Rose Friedman's Jewish Vegetarian Cooking, featuring recipes such as mock gefilte fish and stuffed aubergines and goulash with potato kneidlach. Advice about dining out will also be provided.

Ms Barnard noted that Jewish law required people to show kindness to animals, protect the environment and conserve natural resources, commitments in line with vegetarianism.

"We need to be aware of the realities of the global meat industry", she said. "It is our responsibility to apply Jewish teachings to how we obtain our food and use natural resources."
