Just itching for a WJR bagel

A descendant of a World Jewish Relief founder has reprised a famous movie image in the cause of boosting "box office" for the charity's annual Big Bagel campaign.

Hannah Layton dressed up as Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch, albeit with a culinary addition. Her great-great uncle Lt-Colonel Julian Layton helped launch the Central British Fund, which eventually became WJR. The CBF was instrumental in saving thousands of Jews from the Nazis.

Ms Layton said WJR had been important in her life since childhood. "Visiting the former Soviet Union and meeting the people WJR helps first-hand made it clear to me how vital their work really is."

WJR has been running the Big Bagel since 2009, bringing together thousands of people for bagel-themed events raising money for, and awareness of, the charity's global commitments. WJR hopes to generate more than £100,000 from the 2012 programme.

This year, supporters are being encouraged to enjoy their bagels as part of a pampering session.

Kosher brand Adafina is supporting the project and will donate 25p to WJR for every bagel sold in its St John's Wood store next month
