Danny Bergson is the new rabbi of Glasgow’s Newton Mearns Hebrew Congregation, filling the vacancy created by the move of Rabbi Pinchas Hackenbroch to the Woodside Park community in North London.
It is the first ministerial appointment for Rabbi Bergson, who has been director of Ignite the Soul, providing events for young adults across Manchester. He studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and plays guitar in a rock band.
He will move to Glasgow with his wife Anna and their three young children to take spiritual charge of the 420-member congregation at the beginning of January.
“Anna and I are thrilled to take up this challenge,” the 30-year-old said. “Newton Mearns is a fabulous community and we hope to work together to inspire and invigorate it.”
Synagogue chairman Howard Beach was delighted both by the speed of the appointment and to “have secured the services of a young couple whose enthusiasm is contagious”.
