Nursery times

South London's first new Jewish educational establishment for nearly 15 years has opened in Kingston.

Shalom Nursery, a non-profit-making charity, is based at the local United Synagogue but is open to all Jewish children. It can accommodate up to 24 pupils.

Start-up costs were funded by the synagogue, local benefactors and educational philanthropist Benjamin Perl. The staff includes two Israeli teachers.

Shalom chairman Colin Green said: "We have had interest from parents who have not previously been associated with any Jewish community. The idea of being able to live in one of the most beautiful areas of London and have a Jewish education for your children is attractive to young parents."

A party was held at the synagogue for community members and their partners who had contributed to the establishment of the nursery.
