Big Apple tempts West London rabbi

A West London Synagogue minister will be taking a reverse career journey to the late community leader Rabbi Hugo Gryn by serving a New York congregation.

After two years with the West London rabbinic team, Rabbi Danny Burkeman will leave at the end of June to take up a post at the Community Synagogue in Port Washington, Long Island. Rabbi Gryn spent time at Port Washington before joining WLS in 1964.

It will not be the first American experience for Rabbi Burkeman, who trained in Los Angeles and had stints as student rabbi at communities in Utah and California.

Rabbi Burkeman said the move would be "bittersweet".

He was sad to leave his position at West London but was excited about the opportunity to be an active part of the vibrant New York community.

"I feel very privileged to have been able to begin my rabbinate at the synagogue where I grew up and became barmitzvah," he said.

He was also proud to follow in Rabbi Gryn's footsteps.

"When I saw his name, I immediately felt a connection to the synagogue, and I am honoured to be another link in this inspiring chain of rabbinic leaders."
