Four north-west London women have been knitting blankets for elderly WJR clients in the former Soviet Union in memory of a dedicated supporter of the charity.

Mimi Israel, Vivienne Kesztenbaum, Georgette Salinger and Michele Stern are honouring their good friend Rosalind Beckman, who died of cancer a few years ago.

Mrs Beckman had been involved many WJR projects, being part of its Mission Impossible in which a van laden with vital supplies was driven to Moldova. The women have asked family and friends to sponsor squares on the blankets, which will help see the beneficiaries through the bitter winter months. Over £8,500 has been raised to date.

"We decided that Rosalind's life and work deserved a fitting memorial," Mrs Stern said. "It seemed that the most appropriate way was to raise funds for World Jewish Relief, a cause that was very close to her heart. By having the squares sponsored, "WJR will benefit twice over".
