Luton synagogue's open house

The first open house at Luton Hebrew Congregation since last year's move to a converted doctor's surgery proved a popular attraction.

Local faith leaders from a variety of communities were the principal guests, among them representatives of Bedfordshire Progressive Synagogue. Also present was a BBC local radio presenter, who was impressed by an interior with "stained glass windows resplendent, enhancing the warm and welcoming atmosphere".

Rabbi Yossi Schwei and some of his congregants explained Jewish rites and practices to the guests.

Luton's president Brian Green said they were buoyed by its success, adding: "We are planning a second and third one for others interesting in seeing the inside of a local synagogue."

The guest list would include MPs, councillors, teachers "and other clergy who were working on a Sunday afternoon and so could not join us on the first occasion".

The Chief Rabbi will consecrate the new building this month and Luton plans to become a full constituent member of the United Synagogue.
