Volunteer of the week

January 21, 2010

Adele Barbanel

The 59-year-old has volunteered at Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre since 1996

Why Jewish Care?
I was watching a television programme featuring the Chief Rabbi visiting Jewish Care’s homes and thought to myself that I would like to be involved with something similar.

What does your current volunteering role involve?
As the volunteer desk co-ordinator at Redbridge JCC I meet and greet new volunteers and attempt to place them in our various resources in Redbridge. We always need a wide range of skills from people such as hairdressers, drivers, entertainers, befrienders, quiz masters, etc. Many people have amazing talents that only become apparent once they start volunteering with us.

What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
I love my job as it enables me to meet so many people from our community. It makes it very social. The volunteers’ contribution is staggering and they find tremendous satisfaction and enjoyment from it. Some are so good at their roles that they have been recruited to work as paid staff.
