It's buttoned up in Yorks for HMD

February 3, 2014

The choice of Huddersfield University as the permanent home for an outdoor memorial based on a 6 million+ exhibition was revealed as part of the Kirklees HMD event at Huddersfield Town Hall.

In partnership with Kirklees Council, artist Antonia Stowe created the original installation in 2006 for Huddersfield Art Gallery. Designed to help young people appreciate the scale of the Shoah, victims were represented as buttons collected by locals. As word of the project spread, buttons were donated by individuals and organisations across England and further afield. A national tour of the exhibit continued until 2011.

A £1.5 million fundraising campaign will be launched through an independent trust to pay for the memorial and its installation, a three-year post for an educational worker and the transfer of the council’s Holocaust archive as an additional resource.

An exhibition on genocide opened yesterday at Huddersfield Library and will run until February 8.
