It was just like old times for Ann Widdecombe as the ex-minister was quizzed by a former high-ranking civil servant at a Watford Synagogue event.
Her interrogator was longstanding Watford member Sir Leigh Lewis, who until retirement two years ago was permanent secretary at the Department of Work and Pensions.
During a lively interview, Ms Widdecombe spoke about her career and the people who had most influenced her. She also fielded audience questions, revealing her favourite prime minister — John Major — and discussing her views on immigration, NHS reform and her “life enhancing” stint on Strictly Come Dancing.
The one question she declined to respond to was a request for clarification of her infamous comment that there was “something of the night” about former Tory leader Michael Howard.
