Signing up for refugees
Marking Refugee Week, the Jewish Council for Racial Equality is trying to get at least 1,000 signatures for its “No way to live” petition in support of asylum seekers’ rights.
Jcore’s Dr Edie Friedman said the intention was for asylum seekers “who have waited for a decision on their claims for more than six months — the Home Office’s own target for decision-making — to be allowed to work.
They can then support themselves instead of relying on charity. Many people have survived in limbo for up to 13 years before getting leave to remain.” The petition, to be presented to Parliament, has so far attracted 300 signatories.
