On the menu in Leeds

Sinai Synagogue Leeds Judaism through Cooking programme got off to a tempting start with Carey Glass demonstrating how to cook blintzes and director of education Gwynneth Lewis teaching about Shavuot. Participant Petra Mullen said: "It was fabulous to make something new with a lovely collection of people. Carey’s cooking and Gwynneth’s information complemented each other perfectly.


Come dancing at Kinloss

Finchley Synagogue was a sea of blue and white as a record 1,400 guests attended Bnei Akiva's Yom Ha'atzmaut party. Home Secretary Theresa May and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis were among the crowd for the Kinloss event, which also featured a Yom Hazikaron service extended to incorporate victims of terror.


Songs of praise excite Essex

Redbridge's Yom Ha'atzmaut gala at the local Jewish community centre attracted more than 400 revellers from across the age spectrum. There was arts and crafts and face painting for the young, as well as a youthful element to the entertainment with performances from the Clore Tikva and Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary choirs.

In the wake of the Gaza conflict, "Manchester Jewry has come together to support Israel through some hard, hard times," explained Melissa Chapman, one of the organisers of the main Manchester Yom Ha'atzmaut event. "So we wanted this to be a proper celebration - and I think we succeeded."


United in Kent

Chatham Memorial Synagogue attracted 60 people from across Kent's Jewish communities to mark Yom Hashoah and Yom Ha’atzmaut. A Yom Hashoah service, conducted by synagogue chairman Jon Weiner, included included prayers for fallen members of Israel’s Defence Forces.


Birmingham marks Yom Hashoah

More than 130 people attended the Birmingham and West Midlands Yom Hashoah commemoration held at the King David School. Because of the current situation in the Ukraine, the event focused on the events of the Holocaust there including the massacre at Babi Yar, interspersed with excerpts from Shostakovich's Babi Yar Symphony.

Sinai Synagogue in Leeds hosted two speakers to commemorate Yom Hashoah. Professor Griselda Pollock of Leeds University spoke on the theme: How do we remember the Holocaust? How do we remember the Holocaust culturally? What are the politics and ethics of remembrance?


Maccabi appoints new board member

Maccabi GB has appointed Daniel Rubin to its board. Mr Rubin, the managing director of property development company, Glenmore Group, comes from a family background which is steeped in Maccabi GB history. His involvement with Jewish sport includes his Sunday morning footballing career, where he regularly represented Glenmore FC in the Maccabi GB Southern Football League.
