Give the Victoria Cross hero his due
Four Jewish Victoria Cross heroes from the First World War are to be honoured with special paving stones. Which is excellent.
But there weren’t four Jewish VC winners. There were five. The fifth, Issy Smith, is being ignored because, unlike the others, he was born not in Britain but in Egypt.
That didn’t stop the British Army accepting him as a soldier, and it shouldn’t stop the government now from honouring him alongside the other Jewish soldiers.
