● Tell us about your life

From a young age I was active in the Jewish community, including co-founding the Polish Union of Jewish Students and later as an active member of the European Union of Jewish Students.

Rabbi Russ Shulkes

The 29-year-old and his wife, Esther Sprung Shulkes, 26, were born and raised in South Florida. They studied for degrees at universities in New York and Miami and both spent time in Israel before working in teaching positions.

They are the first chaplaincy couple to serve the south coast on a permanent basis, working with around 500 students at universities in Brighton, Sussex, Kent, Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth.
They have two children, Shmuel and Sherira.

Rabbi Daniel Braune Friedman

The 31-year-old was ordained at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School in New York, in June. Before moving to Oxford he served as a hospital chaplain, a synagogue intern and a campus rabbinical intern at Washington University and New York University. His wife Hannah is a social worker and received her Master’s degree from Hunter College, New York, in 2006.

● Tell us about your region
We have been here since early September. Oxford University has around 400 students registered with JSoc and Oxford Brookes has around 50.
