Ottolenghi on Containing the Iranian Threat

By Yvetta, October 16, 2010

The best way to avoid a nuclear showdown with Tehran is to support its democratic opposition and human rights, agues Emanuele Ottolenghi:
The recent decision by the Obama administration to sanction some of the Iranian regime’s worst human-rights abusers is a welcome if belated step in the right direction. But it falls far short of what could be done on this front to further isolate Tehran. The European Union, meanwhile, hasn’t even decided yet whether to consider at all human rights sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Even Ben knows wheat from chaff

American blogger Ben Moscovitch has always struck me as a wishful thinking naif. However, in a post of 14 Oct he proves that there are limits even to his myopia (good on yer, Ben!):

A State by Any Other Name

By Yvetta, October 14, 2010

I've just read an interesting article by a Sydney lawyer, David Singer, who suggests that Israel should change its name. Here's part of what he wrote:

'Israel needs to introduce a circuit breaker – one that places the ball firmly in the Arab court. The Arabs can then decide whether to negotiate with the Jews or not on the final allocation of sovereignty in the West Bank and the acceptance of each other‘s right to exist.

Have a read of this - apparently, if there's a happy outcome, it could send all boycotts belly-up!

Why are taunting antisemitic blogs and bloggers given free rein on the JC Blogs?

By Yvetta, October 3, 2010

It's a fair and pertinent question, so I thought I'd ask it. I look forward to hearing the response of the JC staff.

The Anonymous Hand Strikes Again

By Yvetta, September 13, 2010

Prematurely closing blogs. I'm sorry, but it is (i) singularly unintelligent to close a blog just hours after it was opened (ii) unfair to people who may wish to reply to a challenge duroing the discussion but who have yet to check back (iii) counter-productive, making people wonder what is the use of logging into the JC to blog about and debate issues of relevance.
Give each blog two full days of life at least!

The Refugees of 1948 - what the PSC don't want you to know

By Yvetta, September 12, 2010

And that goes for our friend ibrows

“The plight of Arab refugees, consequent upon the war that was started by the Arab League, has not only aroused genuine humanitarian concern,” remarked the London Jewish Chronicle in December 1948, “but has also formed the pretext of much unscrupulous propaganda against the Jews.”

By Yvetta, August 31, 2010

Michael Gottlieb posted a blog on 30 August. An "anonymous" moderator has now closed comments for that blog. Yet two blogs opened that same day, by ibrows and clevenson, are still open for comments - as they should be, for many of us have not the opportunity to read blogs on here the very same day that they are posted.
Michael's beautifully written blog seems to have been closed to comments absurdly prematurely.

The Manchester Cathedral Exhibition came to my town too - it's every bit as bad as described & is supported by politicians

By Yvetta, August 2, 2010

I note with interest the Manchester Jewish community's indignation about the exhibition of Gaza drawings held at the cathedral there. I read about the Manchester exhibition on Daphne Anson's blog (reproduced on the fantastic CiF Watch site) and saw there excerpts from the exhibition organiser's blog, which would seem to confirm an earlier assertion by a CST official that the organiser, Cox, is antisemitic. I live in a small town in Wales.

The vile-tasting poison of the Tribe of Theobald

By Yvetta, July 19, 2010

Sniffing around a certain Palestine Solidarity Campaign website, I found this Israel- and Jewry-vilifying piece from one of the Theobald Jews, whose forename is shared by a certain kidnapped soldier, reacting to the findings of that online survey of UK Jews reported in the current JC. (If you do nothing else, look at the final few paragraphs, but grab a sickbag first):

Ron Prosor Stays Here! Hip, hip, hooray!

By Yvetta, July 16, 2010

Meiron Reuven has been appointed Israeli rep at the UN. This means that the wonderful Ron Prosor remains here in this (in some senses) Septic Isle, where his articulate and attractive presence is sorely required.
Reuven has neen appointed by Lieberman without consulting Bibi - I hope he's as articulate and skilled in English as Ron Prosor is. Israel needs more fluent English-speakers presenting its case; it also needs its world-broadcasting answer to Al Jazeera and Press TV.

Cherchez le Lib Dem - again! Now in Bristol ...

By Yvetta, July 8, 2010

... tomorrow in a council chamber near you, no doubt, introducing an anti-Israel motion based on lies and ignorance.
Let's hope that when this happens councillors from the Tory side will be better prepared than the lily-livered of that species were in Bristol last evening.

Obama and Bibi...Abbas and Peace

By Yvetta, June 14, 2010

Just how bad (or good - I'd say "not very") Obama is for Israel, and whether Abbas is a genuine peace partner, figure in a really meaty in-depth studio discussion on Shalom TV, which is distinguished by the expertise and courtesy of the two "opposing" speakers and the chairman as well.
The video is really interesting for all interested in prospects for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Lib Dems' Poison Brew

By Yvetta, May 5, 2010

Honeyed words opposing antisemitism (all the major parties do that, after all) cannot disguise the poison that lurks inside the Lib Dems' chalice:
It was the LibDem’s leader, Nick Clegg, who voiced support for an arms embargo on Israel. Moreover he said it in CIF.
And Clegg has been advised by Nicholas Blincoe, a former ISM activist. Blincoe’s insights about Israel include this one:
