So why were the settlers conspicuous by their absence ?

It is not rocket science.The settlers are all right Jack, and are wisely keeping their heavily subsidised,privileged heads down. Vast amounts of money that should be funding proper public services in Israel are being poured into these illegal, ideology driven, colonial enterprises. At the same time they have a stranglehold on Israeli policy. Their continued expansion makes peace ever more unlikely, thereby killing any prospect of a two state solution,which in turn leaves only the prospect of one state from the river to the sea.

Settler worship will be the death of the Jewish State.
