40 years on: El Rabino Argentino de Queens

In yesterday's El Diario/La Prensa, there is a story by Silvina Sterin Pensil about a rabbi in Queens. He has been in the US 40 years now, his name is David Algaze. He says people sometime stare when they see him in a kippa and then hear him speaking Spanish. His shul, located at 108-11 69th Street, is in the leafy neighbourhood of Forest Hills.

Explosion at synagogue in the US and upcoming Nazi rally

The Chabad Lubavitch Synagogue in Santa Monica, California suffered an explosion which, intially thought to be an accident, has been linked to Ron Hirsch, a 60-year-old who was known to frequent synagogues and seek charity from them and other Jewish organisations in the area. No motive has yet been established.

New York loses Shifra Lerer, Yiddish performer born in Argentina

Argentine born Shifra Lerer passed away on Saturday here in NY. She was 95. She was a darling of the Yiddish theatre scene who performed in such well known mainstream pieces as "Those Were the Days" and Avalon( both from 1990) and Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" (1997); she portrayed a very Jewish persona in these films.

Noy Aloosha, a 31yo Israeli journalist and musician, made a mockery of Qaddafi by dubbing in a song over his speech; so now we see him but hear "Hey Baby" by Pitbull. It is titled Zenga-zenga, in echo of the word zanqa, which means alleyway in Arabic. Qaddafi threatened to hunt down his opponents in alleyways.

closing of the comments when I posted about denier Michael Santomauro, was completely
taken down; the comments about MS were closed - afer he himself got on.
Jose and others tracked down the sad fact that Santomauro has been registered
here since 2008...so I wonder if I am embarassing the editors here - why can they
not let me have my say? I was not even rude or libelous. Just questioning what
kind of status quo exists whereby a denier gets his say and I get an entire

Book Sale at Yeshiva University

Yeshiva University is holding its annual seforim sale - its book sale. 150,000 new/used, 13,000 title will be on the shelves: Gilded Torah, Talmud, novels, cookbooks, biographies, humour, self help, childrens, all Jewish themed. It runs February 9-27. 15,000 people are expected, with more than $1m to be spent.
The event is managed by students, and has been on for 25 of the 125 years of YU's history. The sale is run also by its affiliate, Stern College for women. 58,000 Yeshiva alumni as well as students, will attend, along with many others. Profits go to charity and student organisations.

Shoah denier on the UWS sends spam emails to PTA of UES school

Melinda Batelli-Scopaz, the parent of a kindergartener at PS 290 on the Upper East Side, decided that one of her fellow parents with a child in the school was not too bright. In fact, in a New York Times article of 26 January, by Fernanda Santos and Noah Rosenberg, she says she 'came to the conclusion that this guy is a moron.'
The 'moron' in question is Michael Santomauro, who is the editorial director of the American division of Theses & Dissertations Press, which publishes Shoah sceptics who live in countries where denial is a crime.

Death of the nazi hunter Tuviah Friedman

Tuviah Friedman passed away on 13 January in Haifa, at the age of 88. He was born in Rodam, Poland, where his entire immediate family, save his sister Bella, were killed in the Shoah. He swore revenge, much inspired by Asher Ben Natan (ne Arthur Pier), who exhorted: "Friedman, you must find Eichmann. I will say it to you again: You must find Eichmann."
