city of his birth

I was amazed at the story of the Arab who has been selling books in Jerusalem for many years, and who is now to be deported.........

" after living in THE CITY OF HIS BIRTH for many years ON A SERIES OF TOURIST VISAS "

Get your heads around that if you possibly can. This is one very strange " western liberal democracy ".

Does Israel genuinely have no conception of how crazy it has become ?

Yes crazy isn't it why the Arabs don't want to leave the "apartheid" State of Israel?

JonOtway hardly irrelevant if you stopped to check the position instead of pursuing your blind bash Israel agenda you would have learned that simply because someone is born in a country (Jordan) does not automatically give them the right to citizenship of a country (Israel) if the country exercising jurisdiction at the date of birth (Jordan) no longer exercises jurisdiction over that place.
For example The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constituion guarantees the automatic right of citizenship to anyone born in the United States (but only while subject to its jurisdiction).
At the date of this gentleman's birth (1954) Jordan was illegally occupying and had illegally annexed the eastern part of Jerusalem. The gentleman concerned was in Jerusalem when Israel liberated the terrirtory from Jordan and could have applied for citizenship as he was entitled to do and as many Arab Jerusalemites living under Jordanian rule have done. He then left Israel and when he returned he again had the opportunity to apply for citizenship he did not and decided to remain in israel on tourist visas. As most tourists know renewal of tourist visas is at the discretion of the Goverment as it is in most Western countries. Furthermore a tourist visa does not give you the right to pursue a paid vocation and is in fact illegal. Let's move on nothing to see here.

Oh, there's everything to see here with regards to how Israel treats non-Jews in the supposedly "united, undivided" Jerusalem. It's Bibi declared that irrespective of race or religion people could live in either the West or the East of the city.
And much as it would be great to have the US Constitution, its provisions don't apply in Israel or the occupied territories. When will Israel have a constitution of its own?

Heavens how we twist and turn. Do the words "for example ..." mean anything? Of course silly me I am forgetting Israel must be held to greater standards even than that bastion of human rights, the USA!

No, Israel is being held to the same standards as it sets itself in in declaration of independence. But we were discussing how Israel treats the non-Jewish citizenry in the "united, undivided" Jerusalem. Can Arabs buy or rent in the West of the city? In practice as well as theory? Why is this man being denied the right to live in the city of his birth? And don't use the Israeli citizenship excuse.
No one recognises Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem and won't do so until its status is resolved between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It's just an act of mean-spirited vengeance against a popular bookseller.

"No one recognises Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem"

Who gives a toss what the antisemites choose to 'recognise'?

"and won't do so until its status is resolved between the Israelis and the Palestinians"

There is no legal 'Palestinian' sovereign entity, and never has been. Jerusalem is part of Israel by legal and historical right. End of.
Of course, rabid Israel-haters like Mr Millis will never accept this simple truth.

Evewryone's an antisemite except Leah, who wants to see the end of Israel through demographic demise. Leah is the biggest anti-Zionist negator of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.
This Leah person is sounding more and more like Yoni1 (even if he appears to have had a gender change).

The most rabid Israel-hater here calls me an anti-Zionist ... tells us all we need to know about his mental state.

But you are an anti-Zionist, Leah, because you think that there should be a single entity between the River and the Sea. That spells the end of Israel, obviously your ultimate goal. You are doing Hamas's work for them.

"that there should be a single entity between the River and the Sea"

Quite spectacular reading comprehension issues there, Millis. I never said anything of the sort.

How is your project to keep J&S Judenrein progressing, Millis? Have you grasped yet that this isn't 1942?

Leah /- or should I say Jose/yoni1 -- you have made it abundantly clear that you want Israeli rule over the occupied territories, which means a single entity between the river and the sea. That's hamas's goal too
