On 2 July, the stone-setting took place of Howard Grief in Jerusalem, and I should like to pay tribute to this extraordinary man, and the unique legacy he left to the Jewish people in his book, "The Foundation and Borders of Israel under International Law", published in 2008 - the product of more than 20 years of research.

It is a work of profound scholarship, yet the documentation of the Jewish legal rights to the land set in an historical narrative, make it a compelling read. Each titled chapter within it is a stand-alone, with the first being the most important.

Howard Grief was a Canadian lawyer specialising in commercial law and litigation, whose passion and love for the land of Israel and the Jewish people set him on the path he was to follow, in 1982.

In 1989 he made aliya with his Israeli wife and two young sons, and whilst practising as an attorney in Jerusalem, was appointed legal advisor to Yuval Ne'eman, minister for energy and infrastructure in the Shamir government, on matters pertaining to Israeli territorial sovereign rights. It is worth mentioning that Ne'eman was a distinguished physicist who set up Israel's space programme, and discovered the existence of quarks independently of Murray Gell-Mann, who won the Nobel prize for the discovery.

Howard realised that Israeli sovereignty did not originate from the UN Partition plan of 1947, universally believed to be the instrument of international law that created Israel, but instead it was the San Remo Conference of the 24th and 25th April 1920, which invested sovereignty in the Jewish People through the representative Zionist organisations.

It was at San Remo, the continuation of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, that the Principal Allied Powers, the victors in the war against the Central Powers, set aside all of Palestine as the land designated for the reconstitution of the Jewish National Home, based on the historical connection of the Jewish People with Palestine.

The San Remo Resolution was described by Lord Curzon, the British foreign minister form 1919, as the Jewish Magna Carta.

The Franco-British Boundary Convention of December 23, 1920, fixing the northern and northeastern boundary of Palestine with Syria-Lebanon, made it clear beyond any doubt that Judea, Samaria and Gaza were to be integral parts of the Jewish National Home. Indeed, the maps of the cartographer and theologian, George Adam Smith, were to be used as the basis of the future borders, based on the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

Howard conducted his painstaking research from British government archives and the minutes of the San Remo conference, both in English and French, as well as numerous other original documents associated with that era.
His original research has established him as the leading world authority on the subject, and has been used in an Israeli government video explaining its rights to the territories.

On a personal note it was my good fortune to have met Howard and enjoyed his friendship during the last two years of his life.

In June 2011, whilst in Jerusalem, I called him up with a view to him giving a lecture in London. He explained that his health would not allow it as he was on dialysis several times a week. Nevertheless, despite his deteriorating health, he was busier than ever, writing articles, giving lectures and responding to requests worldwide for his opinions.

He had presented a petition to the Canadian House of Commons on behalf of Canadian citizens regarding Israeli sovereign rights to the territories, and was in the process of doing the same in the USA to Congress.

He had an ever growing email list, and it was always a pleasure to read his latest missive addressed to "my dear correspondents".

He had a marvellous pen which he used to great effect in his put-downs to those so-called legal experts, dilettantes he called them, who admonished Israel for her "illegal" behaviour.

My particular favourite was a letter on behalf of clients regarding demands from the European Former Leaders Group, including Chris Patten and others, to the President of the European Council, which denounced Israel for its "illegal" settlement activity, including in East Jerusalem, and demanded that punitive measures be taken against it.

He admonished them for their "impudence" and their "complete and abysmal ignorance of Jewish Legal Rights to the Land of Israel", and then went on to inform them what these were, in a concise summary.

In conclusion, Howard was a modest and gentle person, never interested in his own ego, and spent his most productive years documenting Jewish rights to the Land, (at his own expense), so that future generations should have the knowledge with which to fight the delegitimisation and demonisation of Israel, which has now become common currency.

His passing is a great loss to all Am Yisrael. May he rest in peace.

With all due respect, this is flogging a dead horse and really just conjecture, like so much historical research. San Remo, 1920, is about as relevant today as Versailles 1919. Interesting for historical research about the decline of European empire, but ultimately not much more than that. Good Grief... For some

Either Howard Grief was a master of disengenity or he simply wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

His entire argument is based upon San Remo establishing Palestine as the the Jewish National Home.

1) San Remo is dead as a dodo

2) It reiterated the provision of the BF. It did not establish Palestine as the Jewish National Home. It referred to the establishing a JNF IN Palestine. If I said I was going to establish a theme park in France would you take it that the whole of France was to become a theme park.

3) The idea that something could be given to someone/ something that doesn't exist is ludicrous.

4) A JNF was deliberately vague. Whatever it meant it did not mean establishing a Jewish majority state.

But anyway the answer to the question is yes. There is a definite drift to towards the position that this two state bullshit is a dead duck and one state it is. I found this particularly prevalent on my last visit to the Jordan valley where the PA ia hated even more than the IOF.

This is the text of the San Remo Agreement (1920)

It was agreed –

(a) To accept the terms of the Mandates Article as given below with reference to Palestine, on the understanding that there was inserted in the proces-verbal an undertaking by the Mandatory Power that this would not involve the surrender of the rights hitherto enjoyed by the non-Jewish communities in Palestine; this undertaking not to refer to the question of the religious protectorate of France, which had been settled earlier in the previous afternoon by the undertaking given by the French Government that they recognized this protectorate as being at an end.

(b) that the terms of the Mandates Article should be as follows:

The High Contracting Parties agree that Syria and Mesopotamia shall, in accordance with the fourth paragraph of Article 22, Part I (Covenant of the League of Nations), be provisionally recognized as independent States, subject to the rendering of administrative advice and assistance by a mandatory until such time as they are able to stand alone. The boundaries of the said States will be determined, and the selection of the Mandatories made, by the Principal Allied Powers.

The High Contracting Parties agree to entrust, by application of the provisions of Article 22, the administration of Palestine, within such boundaries as may be determined by the Principal Allied Powers, to a Mandatory, to be selected by the said Powers. The Mandatory will be responsible for putting into effect the declaration originally made on November 8, 1917, by the British Government, and adopted by the other Allied Powers, in favour of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

Joe I have news for you the founding charter of the UN means The Mandate survived the demise of the League of Nations. Article 80 of the UN Charter implicitly recognizes the “Mandate for Palestine” of the League of Nations.

Furthermore Joe what about "that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine," says nothing about political rights now does it?

Norman, please read the Balfour Declaration and the San Remo agreement. Neither of them "promises" all of Palestine for a national home for the Jews. They don't set out what the borders should be and they don't define national home. Even the Zionists of the day hadn't agreed what it meant.

It's like the missing "the" in UNSCR 242. But then, both the BD and San Remo are excellent for historical research.

I don't know if you are a football fan, nut let's say you support West Ham. It's great to hark back to the days of Moore, Hurst, Peters and Devonshire, but you ain't got them now and you have to make do with what you got.

As for rights for the indigenous. Again, not defined. But I suspect that was the purpose of the two declining colonial powers which came up with this camel of an idea,

Now to your question. That's surely subject to negotiation.

It is a very good week for Israeli potato and date sales in at Sainsbury's in Cheadle and Middleton and at the company's supermarkets throughout the UK.

July 1-7, 2013 is Buy Israeli Goods (BIG) week where people are encouraged to go to their local Sainsbury's supermarket and purchase Israeli-made products. This is to counter efforts by the boycott movement against Israel which has targeted Sainsbury's to get them to stop selling Israeli goods.

BIG week was coordinated by StandWithUs UK, the Zionist Federation and the Fair Play Campaign Group which is a project of the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council.

They contacted the community and many Christian Friends of Israel groups who have eagerly gotten on board and are buying out shelves at their local Sainsbury's stores.

Manchester Zionist Central Council executive director Karen Solomon buys Medjool dates from Sainsburys on the first day of the Buy Israeli Goods Buycott week.

"It is very important for us to encourage stores and supermarkets to stock Israeli produce and other goods such as wine and other items from Israel that are in the kosher sections. You will also find many items in the Pharmacy originate from the Israeli company, Teva. We already experienced the Co-op operating a partial boycott of Israeli goods and we need to ensure that no other companies follow suit," stated StandWithUs UK chairman, ZF vice president and president of Manchester Zionist Central Council Joy Wolfe.

Shlomie Liberow, StandWithUs-UK campus director explained that the organisers of BIG are "keen to get the message across that boycotting Israeli products will not help - but actually harm the Palestinians .

Joy Wolfe concluded, "Although this week was mainly focused on Sainsbury's, we want to encourage people to buy Israeli goods every week in all their local shops and supermarkets and to continue to ask them to BUY ISRAELI GOODS

If you really want to help Jewish causes, why don't you join us for the Tzedek London-Cambridge ride on September 8? It's only 60 miles and quite flat (apart from a bit of undulation and the Harlow Alps. Nothing hard for you, obvs).

Trying in her own pathetic way to deflect attention from the massacres going on in Syria and Egypt not to mention the daily suicide bombings in Iraq and Pakistan and reports that those beacons of tolerance and respect for human rights Syria and Iran are planning to run for a spot on the UN Human Rights Council later this year.
In respect of the human rights violations being daily perpetrated in the Turkish democracy the AIDs sufferers however are strangely mute. No doubt therefore why they are fixated on Israel.
