BBC uses admirer of antisemite to assess "Arab Spring" reporting

The BBC has issued the "Mortimer Report" reviewing its coverage of the so-called "Arab Spring".

Edward Mortimer is former UN Director of Communications

Look at the writers Mortimer most admires:

http://www.righttononviolence.org/?p=1261

Maxime Rodinson. Walid Khalidi. Mohamed Sid Ahmed. Fred Halliday. Ernest Gellner. Kanaan Makiya. Edward Said – even though, of course, they disagreed strongly with each other. Perhaps above all Israel Shahak, whom you may not think of as a writer, but he wrote indefatigably – thousands of pages translating bits of the Hebrew press which he knew the government press office would never translate; long handwritten personal letters; and one or two important small books, especially “Jewish History, Jewish Religion”. A strong and brave man, not always right perhaps, but one of those who makes it just about tolerable to be a member of the human race.

The truth is that the late Israel Shahak was a raging antisemite:

http://frontpagemag.com/2010/02/16/the-pathology-of-jewish-anti-semitism...

Within Israel, one of the most openly antisemitic Jews was the late Professor Israel Shahak, who taught chemistry for decades at the Hebrew University. He insisted that Judaism teaches Jews to worship Satan, to connive against non-Jews and to murder them. He stopped just millimeters short of saying that Jews use gentile blood for ritual purposes. He claimed that the Talmud is filled with calls to murder gentiles, and that Jews regard gentiles as subhuman. He collaborated with Neo-Nazis all over the world. Naturally he wanted Israel to be speedily destroyed, and he was one of the first Israelis to openly collaborate with Palestinian terrorism, long before the Oslo “process” commenced and produced so many others who have emulated him.

In an analysis of Shahak, the British writer Paul Bogdanor notes: “According to Shahak, the Jews think of nothing but making money for the benefit of the Jewish state … According to Shahak, the Jews plan to dominate much of the world through an Israeli empire …“extending [in Shahak’s words] from ‘Algeria or Morocco’ from the west to China in the east, and from Kenya or even South Africa in the south to the USSR in the north… According to Shahak, the Jews facilitate the spread of vice in order to enslave the masses (“Part of the motivation” must be “encouraging drug addiction and thus promoting political apathy”)….”

How telling that the BBC chose a Shahak admirer to write their report!

A slow " news" day Jonathan ?

I can't quite see your point. What exactly is your complaint about the content of the report ?

Morning Mary you're up early trolling away today as usual with nothing to contribute. Suggest you get a remedial teacher to explain the content and the complaint will become self explanatory.

Hi J. Clifford to you believe Israel Shahak is/was an antisemite?

Morning Janet. Why don't you be my remedial teacher du jour and explain it to me ? I may have missed it but I can't find any complaint about the content of the report. And we are told that something or other is telling. What does it tell? Is Jonathan suggesting that the BBC decided they wanted a report and thought " we need to find someone that is an admirer of a writer who is anti Semitic ? " Is he really suggesting the BBC should check out which writers the prospective report compiler admires before commissioning ?

Perhaps Jonathan feels all would be well if everything they did was checked out with him first? I am sure this is the case.

Perhaps Jonathan's life would be easier if he simply compiled the very short list of the world's people that AREN'T antisemitic. Certainly his keyboard would last much longer.

I am afraid Jonathan comes over as more ridiculous and more desperate for attention with each passing day.

Needless to say Jonathan is spot on the money. Shahak was an inveterate antisemite .
Mary do stick to the Pogues videos . Far more entertaining and relevant .

No there probably is not anything wrong with a report written for the BBC by someone who admires anti-Semites quite the contrary. The BBC in Daphne Anson's words

has made public the findings of a generally favourable, indeed in some respects adulatory, report of the Corporation's coverage of the so-called Arab Spring, and the Al Beeb website is not slow to pass the news on.

(Funny that Al Beeb trumpets the findings of this, the Mortimer Report – Edward Mortimer is described as "Middle East expert and former UN Director of Communications" – yet is so cagey about the contents of the Balen Report, huh? Gee, that Balen Report must have harsh things to say about Al Beeb's attitude to Israel.)

Now why didn't they get Mr Balen to write the report then they could have supressed that one too! By the way does anyone know where Mr Balen is these days?

Jonathan seems to be a highly focused and determined victim. He needs to understand that permanent victims make poor friends and poor advocates.

How wonderful it would be if Jonathan could harness his undoubted energy and the power of his official positions in the cause of doing something creative and useful, rather than scouring the darkest recesses of the internet in search of an endless stream of drivel.

Jonathan, re doing something creative and useful....

One excellent example you might follow is that of Jonathan Arkush...see his blog above. Another is the example of Mick Davis and others who have met and had dialogue with the King of Jordan.

I don't think Hoffman would be allowed to operate in the circles that Jonathan Arkush and Mick Davis are able to operate in. This is probably on account of his not knowing how to behave in polite company.

@zaheerayin :rather than scouring the darkest recesses of the internet in search of an endless stream of drivel -
something obviously at which you are an expert.

Something he said or something he wore ?

I still cannot see what in the content of the report Jonathan is complaint about.

The real contrast here is this.

What Jonathan Arkus and his colleagues are doing doesn't count for Hoffie. That belongs in " the leadership don't do anything " folder.

Patient, selfless, unpaid and mostly unseen work on behalf of the community is something that is as nothing. The big downside for Hoffie is that it doesn't get you any personal attention.

Real Jews go out onto the streets with two or three similarly demented acolytes and make shame the community with hideous self serving behaviour including homophobic rants.

see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBH6XONDpes

And, it is worth noting, not a single occurrence of the word " I " in Jonathan A's post
