One way to fight UCU

David Newman in the Jerusalem Post has this excellent suggestion to fight boycotters and raise the standard at Israel's universities.

Nor should it be directed only at the Jewish audience, but should seek to bring in the best students and researchers from around the world. The many Asian students who flock to the USA and Europe should be enticed to see Israeli universities as a viable alternative. In addition to the obvious financial and “goodwill” opportunities, this will serve to place Israeli universities back at the cutting edge of scientific achievement.

Israel’s scientific standing in the world remains high, but not as high as it was 20 or 30 years ago. The internationalization of the universities is an important step in this respect, and our friends and patrons are invited to rise to this new challenge and to think of how they, too, could contribute to this important endeavor.

So when you coming Millis? - Now that the feckless Cameron has shown himself to be anti-israel by resigning from the JNF it won't be long before all connexion to Israel is considered passe in the UK - I hope the Jews in the UK have the good sense to realise which way the wind is blowing and don't leave it until it is too late.

When? The day Israel hands over the West Bank to Palestinian control. Then it will remain a Jewish and democratic state.

Bully for UCU

The EU " definition " of antisemitism is ludicrous. The content is absurd but the real absurdity is the fact of it.

No institution or anything or anybody else can " define " a word or expression. Language doesn't work like that. Here we have the Humpty Dumpty syndrome again.

The meaning of words or expressions are the sum of the use of them. The ordinary users of the language determine the meaning of words and expressions.

If you stopped a thousand regular Joes and Josephines in the street and asked them what they understood by " anti semitism " they would say stuff like...

hatred of Jews

discrimination against Jews

persecution of Jews

etc etc etc

You can be pretty sure Israel wouldn't get a mention.

armbach, Israel is seen as a collective of Jews. Whilst it is perfectly reasonable to criticize a particular policy, it is never reasonable to criticize a nation as a whole - which is what we see from the IOsrael bashing brigade - even on these blogs. Surely you understand that whilst not every critic of Israel is an antisemite, all antisemites are critics of Israel - and the use of particular language, or analogies, is indeed antisemitic. It is this that the EUMC recognizes - and which the racist UCU do not.
