Believing in Israel makes strange bedfellows

There's a conference taking place in London next month, under the heading WE BELIEVE IN ISRAEL. http://www.webelieveinisrael.org/
It's a BICOM event, but it is supported by the Fair Play Campaign Group, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Zionist Federation and the New Israel Fund. The ZF and NIF? Together? What strange bedfellows!!
What about all the bile emanating from senior ZF officials about the New Israel Fund? Has that been forgotten? Have they been forgiven? For Israel? In any case, it's a welcome move for a conference that will enable people to "show their support in one simple concept – Israel as a democratic and Jewish state".
Democratic and Jewish means a two-state solution, because if Israel holds on to the occupied territories it will be neither.

It's likely to be a good conference (if the shouties stay away), because it has help from Makom, "an Israel Engagement initiative supported by the Jewish Agency" (probably the only worthwhile thing the Agency does nowadays) "that embraces the vibrant complexity of Israel and the Jewish People."
Glad to hear someone does.

But isn't it marvellous, Yvetta, that the Zionist Federation and the New Israel Fund have found common cause in a Jewish and democratic Israel, despite the shouties and bile-mongers? Rejoice. Just rejoice.

"...common cause in a Jewish and democratic Israel"

You seem to have information that NIF has stopped financing organisations such as Adalah that work for the end of Israel as a Jewish state...

Maybe Adam Ognall can confirm this on this thread - not that we don't trust you or anything of course, T-Sam ...

All Adalah wants to do is help Arab Israelis facing legal problems. What's the problem with that? The UK Taskforce also wants to help the Arab minority. Hang on, isn't the ZF part of that, too, together with the UJIA, Pears, NIF (again), and the Abraham Fund?
I knew there would be a bile-filled element which wants to destroy all attempts at dialogue in the community. Perhaps they should go and set up a far-right pro-Israel group based on their one-state between the River and the Sea ideals. Let's see how much support they get.

Yvetta, yes you are right about the anti-Israels, too. There are Jews, even here, who believe in Israeli sovereignty between the River and the Sea who are doing Hamas's work for them.

"All Adalah wants to do is help Arab Israelis facing legal problems"

Wrong: It drafted a 2007 “Democratic Constitution,” which calls for replacing the Jewish foundation of the state with a “democratic, bilingual and multicultural” framework. Jewish immigration would be permitted for “humanitarian reasons.”

Jonathan, apart from the fact that ngo-monitor has various right-wing axes to grind, so what? Adalah makes some interesting points in the "draft" constitution. It was in response to Jewish groups proposals -- some of them quite racist (didn't see anything on NGO-monitor about that) -- and it never went any further than. Adalah main job is to help Arab Israelis, just like the UK Taskforce, of which the ZF and NIF are part.
It's what happens when the state doesn't give the ethnic minority a share in its future. Don't you think non-Jewish Israelis should have a stake in Israel's future?
Why don't you just bring your friends to an anti-webelieveinisrael demonstration? I'd pay to watch that.

NGO-monitor is just like all the far right watch groups. Their one-man-and-the-voice-of-God-in-his-head twist anything and everything for their own diseased agenda.

You use sources which have axes to grind and which conform to your narrow world view. Anyway, you gonna be at the conference? Inside or out? Chag Sameach ve'kasher

"NGO-monitor is just like all the far right"

To demented lefties, the LibDems are probably 'the far right'.

"You use sources which have axes to grind and which conform to your narrow world view."

Talking to yourself again, are you?

"There are Jews, even here, who believe in Israeli sovereignty between the River and the Sea"

Have you found that mysterious document yet which proves that ANYONE but the Jews has legitimate sovereignty there? No? I thought not.

Actually, Leah (gender changed Yoni1/Jose), there are two nations between the river and the sea, Jews and Palestinians. That's why the area has to be partitioned in order to prevent a binational disaster as proposed by Hamas and its useful idiots here who believe in sole Jewish sovereignty in that region.

Paranoia galore from Hamas' useful idiot. I am not Yoni1 or Jose. See a shrink.

The 'Palestinians' are not a 'nation'. Go back to kindergarten and learn some history. And sue the teachers who failed to teach you history first time round.

Tut-tut, Leah. With that phraseology you cannot be anyone but Yoni1/Jose. And whether you like it or not, there is a Palestinian nation and those who advocate a single state between the River and the Sea are doing Hamas's work for them -- making them useful idiots.

Peace in the Middle East may be hard to achieve, but it just may happen...but I am not so sure about peace on the JC blog...we may have to call in the UN here.
Makes for interesting reading though.
Happy Passover from NY.
