The obsession with the far right

Unfortunately people who live in the UK and have an entirely false view of what is actually going on in the Middle East seem to have no difficulty in accepting that an American President has ditched Israel and in the process reneged on assurances previously given.
There is an equitable remedy in English Law it is called estoppel. If A makes a promise to B and in reliance of that promise B acts to his detriment then A is estopped from denying his promise. Ariel Sharon gave certain assurances to President Bush in 2004 one of which was the withdrawal of all settlelements and Israeli troops from Gaza.
Bush in return gave assurances to Israel on behalf of the US and which was approved by both Houses of Congress which I set out earlier in previous blog. Based on that assurance Israel removed all settlements Jews and troops from Gaza.
In addition Mr Netanyahu was set to go to Washington with a proposal that commentators including far left bloggers on this site approved of. That proposal went further than any other Prime Minister let alone Likud Prime Minister had gone in trying to reach an accomodation with the Palestinians who have given us, who actually live here, no reason to believe anything they say except when as in the case of Hamas they continually assure us by their words and actions that their intention is the destruction of Israel.
No POTUS has ever suggested that Israel must return to the "1967 lines" a euphemism for the 1949 Armistice Lines following the War of Independence. It certainly does not say that in Resolution 242. By saying that, whilst not reiterating that the refugee problem be dealt within the borders a future Palestinian State which has always been the US position Obama has effectively left Israel with no negotiating position and has effectively sided with the Palestinians.
The right in Israel are as much if not more interested in peace. We do not relish our children being obliged to enter terrorist bunkers or be faced with making decisions of life and death when confronting human shields put up by Arab terrorists. However land for peace has been proved to be a failure. We gave back Sinai to the Egyptians now they want to renegotiate and their population is clamouring for renewed hostilities against Israel. Who knows what will happen if the Muslim Brotherhood attain power as many are expecting they will do.We made peace with Jordan and whilst many Israelis have visited Jordan and benefited its tourist industry it does not stop Jordanian journalists and other professionals regularly demonstrating for an abrogation of that peace treaty or shopkeepers from putting anti-semtic notices on their shop windows.
I reject completely any of the motives attributed to people who view Judea and Samaria as an integral part of Israel this land was given to us as an etrnal inheritance and that belief has carried us throughout the years of Jewish dispersal. However if for the sake of peace at this time and to prevent further bloodshed then most Israelis including those on the right as Netanyahu's proposal envisages would bite the bullet.
However that is predicated on us being able to trust the other side to keep up its end of the bargain. Nothing so far would encourage me and many of the people living here who would have to live with that decision, not three thousand miles away in a cosy armchair, to take the leap of faith necessary for the establishment of a Palestinian State which its protaganists have already stated in no uncertain terms is the precursor of an Arab caliphate from the river to the Sea.
No assurance by any POTUS that that will not happen will ever be sufficient given how easy it was for Obama to renege on promises given just seven years ago, a blink in Middle East history.
