Wonderful, thank you. Human trafficking and sex slavery are huge problems all over the world (especially in the third world) and it's great to see Israelis leading the world in tackling this issue.

That's utter defamatory crap.

Israel DOES NOT 'lead the world' in trafficking of women.

Read the US State Dept Report linked to in that BBC article. Israel is "Tier 2" - same as Portugal and Japan.

As usual the haters lie their socks off and think no-one will notice. They are so unbelievably DUMB.

Jonathan, what do you expect from someone who aligns herself with every antisemitic hate group, marching on demos organized by supporters of the antisemitic terror groups Hamas and Hizbollah.

Of course, women have greater equality in Israel than any of her beloved friends in the Palestinian areas. In Hamas run Gaza, women's rights are being thrown out the window. Fascist Hamas police pick on women they don't like the look of, and women are arbitrarily arrested because of these self appointed morality police.

Not that Maccoby would tell you.

"....it has also consistently appeared as an offender in the annual US State Department's Trafficking in Persons (Tip) report."

You stupid malevolent idiot Maccoby, MANY countries (including the UK) appear in that Report, since it surveys the situation globally.

Mendacious fool.

It is important to expose Deborah Maccoby particularly when she is lying. I suppose that it is what freedom of exression on the JC Blogs is all about... to print lies about Israel and to have them confronted.

But I wonder whether Maccoby will now have the decency to apologize. Or does she believe that, as things currently stand, it is quite legitimate to brazenly lie?

Israel hardly leads the world on women trafficking, Debs. That's a dubious honour left to the former USSR and most of sub-saharan Africa.
Jonathan, that's a bit early in the morning for splenetic whataboutery, isn't it?

Deborah, what a vile horrible thing to say - fancy you swallowing the BBC's anti-Israel propaganda hook, line, and sinker. You may as well say Britain leads the world in this vile trade - women are trafficked into this country frequently by white slave traders of various ethnicities but of course it is not PC to mention them. Slavery per se is still a problem in parts of the Muslim world.

I don't actually get this. Deborah Maccoby actually cited and quoted a short extract from a BBC online item dated 6 Nov 2007. I haven't checked the facts, maybe things are now better in Israel, maybe the BBC report was wrong, perhaps the UN and the US State Dept were wrongly quoted (or themselves got it wrong).

But, "aligns herself with every antisemitic hate group", "malevolent", "BBC anti-Israel propaganda" etc ... If you use words like this in respect of someone who cares deeply about Judaism, and being Jewish, who opposes antisemitism with every fibre of her being, then what words do you have left for the real antisemites of this world?

Thus is vocabulary cheapened and words made meaningless, hyper-elastic definitions stretched past breaking point -- and dangerously, goal mouths left open for the real racists to shoot in the balls marked "Crying wolf".

I stand by my comment. I am astonished that Deborah would be taken in by a BBC report - and on the basis of it to use such a demonising statement of Israel - beleaguered as Israel is by a host of delegitimisers - as "Israel actually leads the world in trafficking of women". For shame!!! The Nazis and other Jew-haters accuse[d] Jews of dominating the white slave trade. I find it deeply disturbing that Deborah would make a statement of that sort, which can only play right into the hands of antisemites and Israel's enemies.

Yes, Yvetta, I wouldn't have used that subject heading myself without doing a lot of research first. I know very little about this subject so did a quick google search and found there's a great deal about it. Israel probably doesn't "lead the world" in this, but it certainly has -- or had, it's been working hard on it -- a big problem.

3 stories I've looked at so far in some detail:

Coalition Against Trafficking in Women
http://www.catwinternational.org/factbook/Israel.php

==============
The "Natasha" Trade, Donna M Hughes, University of Rhode Island, Journal of International Affairs Spring 2000
http://bit.ly/cJ7LYc
=========

Jerusalem Post TEL AVIV, 12 March 2009 (IRIN) - The largest ever people-trafficking ring in Israel has been uncovered:
http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?ReportId=83436

==========

Maybe "leads the world" was OTT, but I too stand by my comment. For sure there are Jew-haters around and a few of them as we know are Jewish, but one mistaken headline and joining marches dont necessarily put commenters amongst them. I too once joined a march because I was very upset by the ongoing siege on Gaza -- there were people there ignorantly carrying banners saying they were all Hezbollah now. I made jolly sure to stay well away from them.

When you join a cause, you can never be sure who else is going to join, and with what motivation. Their motives don't make my motivation wrong. However they might well make me decide to give my campaigning other forms, but that's a personal choice. Perhaps I should have done with others did, not abandon the whole stage to the devil but ensure visibility for the angels too.

Dr Robinson

These protests did not simply happen spontaneously. They are organized by groups which not only want to see Israel disappear, but by groups which openly support antisemitic terror groups which advocate the extermination of every Jew on earth. And it isn't simply ignorant to say "We are all Hizbollah now" - it is sheer evil. Would you carry on marching if they said "we are all Nazis now"? That is, indeed, aligning yourself with antisemitic hate groups, and it is shameful.

Why is it impossible for you to go on your own march - if march you must?

And whilst you're at it, can you explain why Maccoby never has a single good word - I mean just once would be nice - about Israel or her people. Every single post of hers, without exception, is an attack on the Jews of Israel, who, it appears, can do no right - ever. So much for "her Judaism being important...fighting antisemitism..." etc.

That is hatred. It is not "debate" or disagreement with a policy - it is obsessive hatred.

Deborah Maccoby,

You wrote: "Israel actually leads the world in trafficking of women."

Now are these words true or false? DOES ISRAEL ACTUALLY LEAD THE WORLD IN TRAFFICKING WOMEN?

If they are true, you are telling the truth.

If they are false, you are lying.

Now we were taught about the difference between telling the truth and lying when we were at kindergarten. In the post 1984 Orwellian world, have you actually forgotten the difference?

Dr Brian Robinson writes:

"Maybe "leads the world" was OTT"

No it wasn't OTT.

Maccoby obviously knew that it was incorrect, and as a result, it is rational to conclude that she was lying.

But off course, Maccoby should defend herself on this blog. She is a big girl.

DeborahMacoby is simply a self-hater; but she is in good company.
According to the Telegraph, Iran's Ahmadinejad was born to a Jewish family named Sabourjian, which can be translated “tallis-weaver.” Mahmoud’s father Ahmad Sabourjian changed the name when the family converted to Islam — which took place, the paper says, after the future president’s birth.

The Telegraph actually isn’t the first to out Ahmadinejad as a Jew. Radio Free Europe carried the news back in January 2009, following a blog post on the topic by the son of a pro-Ahmadinejad cleric. But the Telegraph goes further: It found an official document that seems to confirm Ahmadinejad’s origins.

It’s important to recall that Ahmadinejad is not the first prominent Jew-hater with roots in the community. Indeed, he joins a proud line. Russian lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, perhaps the most influential antisemite in post-Soviet Russia, admitted in a 2001 book — after years of denying it — that his father, Wolf Eidelshtein, was Jewish. Zhirinovsky himself bore the name Eidelshtein until he had it changed at age 18.

Then there’s Brooklyn-born chess master Bobby Fischer, who had a Jewish mother and a German father. He began spewing wildly antisemitic ideas during his eccentric, paranoia-plagued later years in self-imposed exile.

But no one has yet matched the self-loathing antisemitism of the champion antisemite of all time, Adolf Hitler. He may or may not have had a Jewish grandfather but he was haunted by the possibility that he might have. Hitler’s father Alois was born out of wedlock, and the identity of Alois’s father — Adolf’s paternal grandfather — remains unknown. One persistent theory is that the old guy was Jewish, possibly a businessman who employed Alois’s mother Maria as a domestic. Most respectable Hitler scholars dismiss the idea, but it seems unquestionable that Hitler himself was quite anxious about it, as psycho-historian George Victor wrote convincingly in his 1998 book “Hitler: The Pathology of Evil.” Among the bits of evidence of Hitler’s anxiety is the widely reported fact that Hitler went into a panic when his British-born nephew William tried briefly to blackmail Uncle Adolf in the 1930s by threatening to go public with the family secret.

An odd sidebar: Nephew Willy Hitler ended up settling on Long Island during the war years, and after a brief lecture tour (based on his Look magazine article, “Why I Hate My Uncle”) and a stint in the U.S. Navy he married and changed his last name in order to sever the family link. Three of his four sons still live in Patchogue, L.I., where they tried for years to avoid publicity and tried to keep their new last name secret. None of them ever married or had children, reputedly so that the Hitler line can come to an end. Curiously, though, Willy’s oldest son is named Alexander Adolf, something the son still says he’s at a loss to explain. And the family name that Willy chose for his sons to bear is Stuart-Houston, a seemingly transparent homage to Houston Stewart Chamberlain, the father of the theory that Germany has a historic mission to destroy the Jews. Whoops.

So, DeborahMacoby,Deborah Fink,Tony Greenstein,Dan Judelson and all the other cabal of anti_israel Jewish bloggers are in infamous Company.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention Woody Allen !

Once again, I am mystified why these "people" are allowed a platform on the Jewish Chronicle. There are limits to free speech and these people cross the line time and time again.

JIC, self-hatred is a meaningless term since for those whom you abuse with it, Israel is not part of the self. Nor, I suspect is Judaism.
Oh, and the Ahmadinejad story--it was never true. And neither is canard about Hitler. Nice try, tho
