What's in a name? Quite a lot, actually

It is, apparently, not just Israelis who are into unisex names.

The American author of this piece has given her child the middle name "Chaim".

Her daughter, that is.

That's kind of ironic as Chaim Herzog was known as "Vivian Herzog" during his time in the British Army, Vivian being a rough translation of Chaim - but of course, more commonly used as a girl's name in the UK!

What's wrong with Chaya, I ask!
One of the ugliest girls' names, imho, is Noa, currently enjoying a (to me, inexplicable) wave of popularity both in Israel and the Diaspora. I'm a name nerd, and I know that even the occasional non-Jew is falling for it.
Noa has a different root from Noah, and was the first Biblical female to inherit property in her own right - so a laudable moniker for a modern gal, perhaps. Dollars to doughnuts, though, that the average person on the street will think first of that old guy with the beard and the Ark.
No ... ah ... just don't geddit!
