To Julie Burchill (In regards to Liberal Judaism and Islam)

Dear Julie Burchill,
It saddens me to read that you have given up with attending synagogue and converting to Judaism. I can see how you would be put off after what you have experienced. You are not alone.
I am a Jew who attends a Liberal Synagogue and I too feel put off sometimes. So do many others that I know.
There are times that I leave synagogue on Shabbat feeling frustrated and angry rather than at peace and happy.

I know that the rabbi that you are referring to is Elizabeth Tikvah Sarah. You will find her name in the “About Us” section of the Jews for Justice for Palestinians website of which she is a signatory among a few other “progressive” rabbis.

On the 27th of this month, there will be a protest vigil in front of the Israeli Embassy where according to Jews for Justice for Palestinians 'Between 27 December 2008 and 18 January 2009, over 1400 Palestinians were killed by Israel in a brutal and illegal attack on the Gaza Strip, destroying lives and infrastructure”.
They will be there alongside Palestine Solidarity Campaign who believe that all of Israel is illegitimate and that 'from the river to the sea' is all Palestine. Their goal is the destruction of Israel.
Why our Liberal “leaders” choose to stand with those that wish our destruction just does not make sense.

I am not writing this out of spite, but out of frustration. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that they are just being naive.
Among many of their misguided and hateful campaigns, the Jews for Justice for Palestinians believe in boycotting Ahava, they have a campaign on their site called Stop Arming Israel, they support the Russell Tribunal.
They also really push Palestinian olive oil which you can by at Liberal Judaism's headquarters in London, the Montagu Centre.

Liberal Judaism also runs a social group called Tent. On a recent Social Action Trip to Israel organised by Tent, participants were invited to go do the following “walk beside the separation wall, visit the growing Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and participate in the weekly vigil in the Arab neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarah”

It seems as if the leaders of Liberal Judaism are more interested in Islam and putting Israel in a bad light. I cannot speak for all of them, but there are a few.
They seem to have an obsession with Islam as the subject of Islam is brought up too often. I sometimes wonder why they don't just convert and be done with it.
Whenever I read LJ today there is usually something in regards to Islam in there, usually to do with interfaith. Interfaith is fine, but how about mingling with other Jews once in a while too.
I think by opening us up to the Islamic community, they are also endangering us.
Some of the organisations that they have interfaith with have been documented to be antisemitic.
I have visited the Montagu Centre in London a couple of times and you would never know there was a synagogue there the way it blends in with all the other office blocks.
Quite recently, the police were called there when a Moslem woman was banging on the front door screaming that she wanted to come in there and kill Jews.

Earlier this year, many of the congregation of a Liberal Synagogue walked out of their Rosh Hashannah service when Danny Rich decided to spend most of the time talking about the wonders of Islam and the Moslem holiday of Eid.

It also made the paper when Jews for Justice for Palestinians had Jeff Halper speak at the Montagu Centre. Jeff Halper supports the boycott of Israel.

What about how Rabbi David Goldberg embarrassed our community when on national television he claimed that there is an apartheid state in Israel that defies international law on human rights.

To be a Zionist or to support Israel in Liberal Judaism feels taboo. Whenever the subject has been brought up with a certain rabbi in regards to support for Israel, their reaction has not been very positive. Their open support for organisations that demonise Israel make us uncomfortable

Why don't I leave Liberal Judaism? Believe me, there are times that I really do think about it.
I don't leave because of my many friends and families who the leaders and representatives do not speak for, the kind people that I know and that support Israel and want to hear about Judaism.
I stay because I am a progressive Jew and I and believe women have equal rights and that halakah does not always have to be so stringent. I support Women of the Wall, I don't care what colour you are, what your sexuality is or how you want to practise Judaism, but I am not interested in Islam or anti Israel propaganda. No matter how peaceful some Moslems seem, you cannot erase what it says in their books about us, the Jews.

I can understand that people in Liberal Judaism want to question things in regards to Israel, but there are those that cross the line and support their own enemies. They are supporting their own destruction with their alliances.

I want to go to synagogue and learn about Judaism, I want to buy Israeli olive oil. I get jealous when I learn of other branches of Judaism saying prayers for the IDF, why can't we?
When they have an Israeli flag at other Synagogues, why can't we?
Why can't our trips to Israel be about our Jewish heritage? Where is the pride?
I stay in hope that things will change, that the Rabbis will listen to their congregation, that they will be real supporters of Israel and will stop shoving Islam down our throats.
Danny Rich has been appointed to five more years as chief Executive.
Maybe I am the one that is naive?

Julie, don't let your experience at that synagogue put you off. As I am sure you know, not all synagogues are that way. There is also Reform, Masorti and Orthodox. Don't give up. You are an inspiration and a mensch, we would be quite happy to have you.

Well said Stanley. As you know (because you commented in the thread) I was horrified that Halper was invited to the Montagu Centre.

"I sometimes wonder why they don't just convert and be done with it."

- I have often wondered what they mean when they describe themselves as "progressive".... now I know what they are "progressing" towards....

You are not alone Stanley - I get loads of emails from bewildered members of Liberal Judaism. You need to have a revolution against your leadership - or walk.

To light a match and burn a flag requires a functioning brain so I think you might have problems ...

Anyone only 6 people read this blog as opposed to hundreds of thousands who read the guardian.

Poor clevenson who thinks might and numbers makes right!

According to his 'logic', 1,500,000,000 Muslims will always be right against 15,000,000 Jews.

He is not even able to realise that all the hate propaganda he spews here was put into his brainwashed pea.

Soon, clevenson will talk how much better he knows the situation in Gaza by telling us how many times he has been there.

Well, the situation in Gaza is what it is mainly because of the HAMAS and it would be much better indeed if they just dropped dead.

But then, clevenson believed the crap that PCHR published about the 80% civilian casualties during Cast Lead, a lie that has been confirmed by HAMAS itself, having admitted that 50% of the casualties were militants. And that is a minimum.

I said clevenson is illiterate:

"brian" instead of "brain"

"Anyone" instead of "anyway"

I'm sure he is innumerate as well, so his '6' and 'hundreds of thousands' are meaningless.

Did you miss out on the remedial classes at school?

Israel is hated as you will find out on Monday

Again, clevenson relies on numbers to prove a point. Racists are also more than non-racists. According to clevenson, racists should be those who are right.
And he is going to prove it Monday.

By the way, how many civilians have been killed, according to PCHR, during cast lead?

One thing should be pointed out. Clevenson is correct on one thing: Israel is hated (that's his clear admission).
It is clear that it is not Israel's government, as the terrorist supporter are trying to make us believe. It is not even the "Zionists" (the word that replaced "Jews" for the antisemites). Just Israel.

What is nice, is that these haters admit they are haters and that they hate Israel, not Israel's government, not Zionists.
By doing this, they prove that they are the antisemites they pretend not to be. EU's definition of antisemitism includes:

Denying the Jewish people their right to selfdetermination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.

By the way, Zionism being defined as "Jewish people's right to self-determination", anti-Zionism is, according to the EU definition, antisemitism.

Clevenson, and that terrorist-loving rabbi, are not naive: they are Jew-hating scum. True, they are ignorant and stupid to the nth degree, but as far as I am concerned that does not give them a pass. They are still Jew-hating scum.

I am sure Clevenson believes all the Pallywood crap - e.g. the Al Dura hoax, the UN school being shelled by Israel hoax, the 1200 children murdered by Israel hoax, the 'peaceful Mavi Marmara humanists armed to the teeth purely for self-defence' hoax, the Israel-steals-organs hoax, and all the other Nazi hoaxes. Brainless Jew-haters and utter losers are like that.

clevenson, the soldiers did board peacefully, and weremet by a baying mob who tried to kill them. In addition, one can easily find on Youtube the IHH jihadists on the Mavi Marmara (which was carrying no aid whatsoever - not a thing clevenson), chnting antisemitic abuse BEFORE even sailing, and expressing hopes that they will become Shaheeds (martyrs0 BEFORE sailing, demonstrating that they had violence in mind.

The IHH is linked by France to the attempted terror bombing of Los Angeles airport.

clevenson, you are a piece of crap.

Back to the post...

Stanley, I understand how you feel about the Liberal synagogue not being supportive of Israel.

I'm progressive too, but find myself at home within the United Synagogue, because although I'm not that observant, I'm surrounded by other peoplth similar values who love and support Israel. People I feel comfortable with. I'd be really upset if I knew my Rabbi was a member of JfJfP. Infact, if this was the case I'd resign. And very noisily too! Good on Julie Burchill.

It's all about where your heart is.

clevenson, whereas the Guardian is for every Jew hating scumbag like you. It was indeed you who used the numerical superiority argument - don't like it when it blows up in your face do you?

No-one was shooting during the descent, or that that stage at all. You really are a gullible Jew hater aren't you. How can you shoot when descending a rope with your hands?

But such stupid statements, you betray your Jew hating lying credentials.

Cretin.

It is now a clear and repeated admission by clevenson that he hates Israel. Not the Israeli government, not the Zionists.
HE HATES ISRAEL and wrote it twice and implies it as well by stating that he will burn an Israeli flag (make sure it was not sold by an Israeli company first!)

He also admits his rally-'friends' also are Israel haters.

He thus admits he is a antisemite of the worse kind. And justifies it by numbers. How can it be that antisemitism is not a good thing, since there are so many people who are antisemitic? Dreyfus was guilty, 50 million Frenchmen couldn't have been wrong. And 1,000,000,000 terrorist-supporters prove that terrorism is a good thing or at least justified.

Comment from AKUS on OyVaGoy: "Since around 200 missiles have been fired into Israel this year from Gaza, and the new Chief of Staff ran Cast lead, I think Hamas may be in for a repeat performance. They never seem to learn and their “pornographic” cheer leaders egg them on from outside Gaza in the hope of vilifying Israel when Israel finally has enough and responds. We are one hop on a kindergarten or bus away from CL 2."
