Four thousand pounds was raised at a summer fete at Jewish Care's Lady Sarah Cohen House on Sunday afternoon (17 August). The event was organised by the ‘Friends' committee, staff and volunteers, attracting more than 500 people to the nursing home in Colney Hatch Lane, Friern Barnet.

The afternoon included stalls, a tombola, children's activities - such as face-painting and a lucky dip -and strawberry teas were served in the courtyard. Accordionist Jenny Kossew gave a lively performance and some of the carers sang on the karaoke.

"It was a nice family day out, the weather was good to us and residents enjoyed all the activities going on," said Cyril Marks, chairman of the ‘Friends' committee. He added: "I am very happy with the amount raised - we spend it on the residents to cover the cost of entertainment and outings and we also purchase equipment for the home."

Visitors came from other Jewish Care homes including Rosetrees which is next door to Lady Sarah Cohen House; Ella and Ridley Jacobs House in Hendon and Rela Goldhill Lodge in Golders Green. The latter is Jewish Care's home for younger adults with physical and sensory disabilities.

The event is held in memory of the fete's founder Betty Silver, a much-loved volunteer, who died last year.
