Jonathan, it looks exactly like the conditions that brought HAMAS to power in Gaza. This is based on the assumption that democracy can arise ex nihilo.

The choice between the anti-Israel dictature of Mubarak and the Nazi dictature of Muslim Brotherhood is not ours, the West, to make.

Let's rather prepare for what is coming and let the Egyptians free to do whatever they wish. Let's withdraw all US and EU aid to Egypt as soon as the new dictature will arise.

1. You can bet the Washington policy wonks will be crawling all over the new institutional arrangements in Egypt

2. I am sure that US assistance will be conditional on moves to democracy

3. But if democracy throws up an Islamist-dominated government which tears up the Peace Treaty, there is nothing much the West can do and Obama would rightly be accused of 'losing Egypt'.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markmardell/2011/02/obama_gets_t...

Mr Obama was no longer the law professor talking of "legitimate grievances". He was the man whose political career has been driven by the spirit of the US civil rights movement, telling Egyptians their passion and dignity were an inspiration to the rest of the world. His rhetoric soared as he became almost the guarantor of a successful revolution:

"To the people of Egypt, particularly the young people of Egypt, I want to be clear: We hear your voices. I have an unyielding belief that you will determine your own destiny and seize the promise of a better future for your children and your grandchildren."

We'll soon see who, of Obama or the sad history of Muslims' missed opportunities, will be right.

Where is JoseAnth, simonsam? Show us your paranoid delusions again, please!

He now thinks he controls the US and EU aid to Egypt.

Ah poor simonsam, with his impaired comprehension, he hardly can understand simple sentences.

Well, the new regime might not be too much in a hurry to reopen the Rafah crossing. I mean, it would really give bad ideas to the US and EU contributors, wouldn't it?
With half of the economy down (tourism) that could be fatal to the regime.

What is the idiot Simonson screeching about this time?

PS. Carter is being sued - I hope he is made to look like the utter scum he is before the court.
