Our man in Amman

One must suppose that Britain's envoys abroad speak in the name of their Government. It is enlightening, therefore, to read this blog by HM Ambassador to Jordan:

http://blogs.fco.gov.uk/roller/watt/entry/it_s_human_rights_stupid

and, if you are not quite sure you really understood what he was saying, read the comments on his blog which follow....His local readers had no doubts.

I don't think one should read too much into Watt's blog. He has clearly "gone native". Inevitably the advent of FCO blogs was accompanied with more leeway for them to speak their minds.

He clearly follows in the long and honourable FCO Camel Corps tradition (note that his wife's Lebanese).

We were at the same college at the same time but I don't remember him.

Gone native, Jonathan? You mean like the UK ambassadors to Israel who receive ZF training? what are they? The smoked salmon bagel corps?

He's not quite as Arabist as you, though.

And certainly less pestilential and mendacious.

Another gem from our chap in Amman:

http://blogs.fco.gov.uk/roller/watt/entry/gaza

"And let's remember that in Israel there are a number of voices saying what you and I are saying. Israeli opinion is not a monolith, and I admire the freedom of thought and expression there. For example, Shlomo Sand's book, recently published in English, "The Invention of the Jewish People", which I'm currently reading."

Sand's book is mendacious drivel.

Speaking of mendacity, Jonathan, any luck yet with drafting a ZF statement that does not disseminate the false claim that "death threats" prevented Mira Awad from performing for the ZF?

Ah but will he post on his blog the real reason for Mira Awad not performing for the ZF? After all, the ZF did falsely and mendaciously (now there's a word you love) claim that she won't perform for you because of "death threats".

Isn't it amazing, Jonathan, that you always get abusive when you are found out? So, how about a ZF communique making it clear that Mira received no death threats and that it was wrong of the ZF to disseminate such false claims?
