On the exclusion of Zeida Goldstone

Judge Goldstone, as everyone now knows, has effectively been barred from attending his grandson's barmitzvah following "negotiations" between the South African Zionist Federation and the Johannesburg shul at which the event was to take place. What pressure, exactly, was brought to bear on the family? Our front-page story raises the possibility that the SAZF was going to demonstrate in front of the shul. Yisrael Medad was told the following:

I understand that all the members of Sandton shul in Johannesburg declared that they would walk out of the shul if Richard Goldstone was given an aliya at his grandson's barmitzvah. As a result of that, the arrangement was made that Richard Goldstone would not attend his grandson's barmitzvah in South Africa.

Perhaps. Either way, everything that needs to be said about this has been said (see also the JC leader this week - not online). Except for this: If the members of my shul decided on masse to walk out when my father was given an aliyah; or if my shul was in any way party to an agreement to have my father excluded from the premesis, I would be saying goodbye to my shul - not my father.

Unfortunately this is a comment I have come to expect from someone living in the diaspora. Mr Goldstone has falsely maligned my country and its defence forces and based on a seriously flawed investigation has put Israel and its people in serious jeopardy he deserves the greatest approbation. He has continually failed to answer serious criticism of both his investigation and its findings and has given strength and aid to Israel's enemies in their attempts to delegitimise the Jewish State. How you can therefore compare your grandfather with someone who has done irreparable damage to the standing of Israel and its people is beyond belief. Mr Goldstone does not merit the honour of being called the Torah which by his very actions he has seriously defamed. I for one support the actions of the SAZF in standing up against this infamy.

I live in the diapora - but I agree with you nevertheless. And there are plenty more.

Goldstone has not been "barred". He is staying away to prevent a mass walkout when he is called up.

Miriam - has your grandfather led a mendacious one-sided UN enquiry which maligns Israel? Has he accepted as one of his co-commissioners a man who says that “Britain’s foreign policy interests in the Middle East seem to be influenced strongly by Jewish lobbyists” ?

I have sat in shul with many unsavoury characters, including criminals (who I have also seen getting aliyot). I don't think any of them should be prevented from praying with a minyan, though I may not care to talk to them at kiddush.

No one is "preventing" him from praying with a minyan.

People are saying they will walk out if he is called up.

I would too.

You are likewise free to walk out of any shul at any time Miriam.
