Local hero

Like everyone else in the media world, the BBC PM programme sent a reporter to stand outside Macclesfield train station last week to interview returning commuters about the comments of their local MP, Sir Nicholas Winterton.
For those who don't know, Winterton caused some enjoyable frissons by complaining bitterly that there was no proper funding for MPs only to travel first class, not least because the people in Standard Class - that's you and me - were "different". I.e. noisy and with the temerity to have children who might interrupt Winterton.
My favourite comment was the man who said, musingly, "He's a good MP." Then, after a long pause: "Mind, he's got a real tip to himself." Says it all, really.

I loved the comment made by one of the other guests on the show (I can't remember who she was). When Winterton suggested that the reason he travels first-class is because MPs need to do so in order to avoid certain types of people, she said something along the lines of "I always travel second-class in order to avoid MPs." I laughed most heartily into the potatoes I was grating for latkes.

Winterton should become a Knesset Member, where the Speaker, Rubi Rivlin (Likud), recently proposed that MKs be upgraded to business class on flights so as not to mix with the unwashed.

Heh, yes - I remember that. He'd fit right in!
