Jumping the gun

Readers of my previous blog will be aware of my views of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. Let's just say that I am not her greatest fan. And to judge from her column today, the feeling is mutual.

But one thing I never realised about her is that she has the ability to see into the future. Today, she lambasts me for what I have done to the JC:

As for propaganda to justify the unjustifiable, there are commentators in this country for whom Israel can do no wrong. One of the most vociferous, Stephen Pollard, now edits the Jewish Chronicle, a newspaper that once expressed a range of views, including those held by liberal British Jews. It is turning hardline.

As I write this, I have been editing the paper for just over four hours. And Ms Alibhai-Brown has already detected my malign influence on the paper.

Not that I would ever accuse her of attacking someone on the basis of her prejudices, rather than the evidence.

I'm no fan of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown but I think you're being a little unfair on her here. I don't think she is saying that you, in your new role, have turned the JC to the right, but perhaps that your appointment is part of a trend to the right that she feels the paper has been heading in for some time.

May I take this opportunity to wish you well in the new role.
