I have read through the article twice, and nowhere does John Lewis threaten legal action. The Jerusalem Post is whistling in the dark. I have just checked the PSC website and the quote is still there.
My guess is that company lawyers have told the company "drop this product, it is probably illegal and we could be complicit" and they have wisely done so, tactfully citing commercial reasons. That's fine as long as the stolen goods are off the shelf, who cares?
