Well done Adalah - NY

November 3, New York, NY – Africa Israel, the flagship company of Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev, announced this week that it is no longer involved in Israeli settlement projects and that it has no plans for future settlement activities. Africa Israel subsequently denied that this was a political decision. However, in the last few years numerous organizations, firms, governments and celebrities have exerted pressure and severed their relationships with Leviev and his companies over their involvement in settlement construction and other human rights abuses, in response to a boycott campaign initiated by Adalah-NY.

Israel’s Coalition of Women for Peace disclosed on Monday that in an official letter to the Coalition, Africa Israel stated, “Neither the company nor any of its subsidiaries and/or other companies controlled by the company are presently involved in or has any plans for future involvement in development, construction or building of real estate in settlements in the West Bank.” In follow-up articles in the Israeli media on Monday, Africa Israel said that the statement was “a description of the business today” and that “Africa Israel builds for all the public in Israel, and does not deal in politics or any other policy.”

Ethan Heitner from Adalah-NY explained, “Following years of settlement construction, and pro-settlement statements and activities by Lev Leviev, the public announcement by Africa Israel that it has no plans to build Israeli settlements is clearly a result of pressure from the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. This provides concrete evidence of the way in which the BDS movement can change companies’ behavior. But Africa Israel can’t speak out of both sides of its mouth and expect a clean bill of health. Africa Israel must unambiguously renounce settlement activity, and all other involvement in violations of Palestinian rights. And Lev Leviev needs to end his involvement in settlement construction through other companies like Leader Management and Development, as well as his support for human rights abuses in the diamond industry in countries like Angola and Namibia.”

Adalah-NY began a campaign to boycott the companies of Lev Leviev in November, 2007, which has since gained support from allies around the world. As a result, the Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch governments have divested from Africa Israel, as have a number of major international investment firms. The British government, UNICEF, Oxfam and CARE have all severed ties with Leviev, and major celebrities have quietly disassociated themselves from him.

The great news is that Israel never exported more than in 2009. Some 15% over the previous year. I guess 2010 will be even better than 2009.
I wish BDS many of this kind of 'success' !

once again the JC provides a free platform for anti-Israel/Semitic posters.

The BDS movement seeks to find success where it does not exist. For those wishing to obtain correct information on the anti-Semitic boycott movement I would suggest you visit the following site:
http://www.divestthis.com/

By the way those were yobos not heroes who ried to disrupt Bibi's speech the same yobos who try to shut down free speech when it does accord with their own warped view of the world as has happened numerous times on University campuses in the so called liberal enlightened West. When Jonathan Hoffman sought to raise a point (not heckle or disrupt the proceedings) at a PSC meeting he was shown the door. The facism of the left of which yankeesubwhatever and zair are but two examples.

Advi3er, to quote Matthew Taylor, one of those "Yobboes"

Gandhi said, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." In the case of Israel and the tone-deaf American Jewish establishment, one could revise this statement to: First they ignore you, then they call you a self-hating Jew, then they call you a delegitimizer and fight you with $6 million [to be spent on helping Israel's image. TS].

What's next? We young Jews won't back down, our numbers are growing, and we will win. Israel will change its cruel, self-destructive behavior. We won't rest until Israelis and Palestinians live together in true equality, safety and mutual respect.

Yes as usual Jews for Injustice to Israelis target the aggressors and not the victims - they won't win Ghandi's cause had merit theirs has none. Calling Israel's legimimate exercise of its right to protect its citizens against Arab terrorism which Jews for Injustice to Israelis openly support as cruel shows how unjust they are. The refugee problem has been allowed to fester for over 60 years to provide amunition against Israel. No other group of individuals who were displaced following hostilities has its own UN organisation looking after it. Nowhere in the world other than in the Middle Easst is refugee status awarded to the descendents of refugees. The UK took in Asian refugees from Uganda and settled them why does Lebanon not grant citizenship to Palastinian refugees who have been living there for sixty years? Anyway its Shabbat here soon so Shabbat Shalomto you all even those who wish us ill!

SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS AGAINST APARTHEID
A DECLARATION

As South African Artists and Cultural Workers who have lived under, survived, and in many cases resisted apartheid, we acknowledge the value of international solidarity in our own struggle. It is in this context that we respond to the call by Palestinians, and their Israeli allies, for such solidarity.

As artists of conscience we say no to apartheid - anywhere. We respond to the call for international solidarity and undertake not to avail any invitation to perform or exhibit in Israel. Nor will we accept funding from institutions linked to the government of Israel. This is our position until such time as Israel, in the least, complies with international law and universal principles of human rights. Until then, we too unite with international colleagues under the banner of “Artists Against Apartheid.”

Inspired by the boycott of Apartheid South Africa, Palestinians have made a call for a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign of Israel. This call has been actively supported by Israelis as well.

British writer John Berger, Indian novelist Arundhati Roy, US poet Adrienne Rich, British film director Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty are just some of the prominent voices that have joined this call. In a movement that continues to gain momentum, a string of artists have recently either cancelled shows or pledged their refusal to be complicit in Israeli Apartheid. Some names include: Carlos Santana, Elvis Costello, Gil Scott-Heron, Dustin Hoffman, Meg Ryan, Faithless and Massive Attack.

More terror attacks this week:

West Bank

19 children injured by Israeli forces

Israeli forces injured 23 Palestinians, the large majority of them in clashes in East Jerusalem. Since the beginning of 2010, Israeli forces have injured 1,051 Palestinians, up nearly 40 percent from the equivalent period in 2009 (755 injuries). Around half of 2010 injuries took place during confrontations in East Jerusalem. Two members of Israeli forces were also injured this week.

On 9 November, the Israeli Police conducted an operation in Al 'Isawiya village in East Jerusalem, reportedly targeting tax‐evaders. The operation, along with a flying checkpoint erected at the entrance of the village, triggered clashes between the residents and the Israeli forces. In the course of the clashes, 19 children (aged between ten and 15) were injured, all by rubber‐coated metal bullets. Three more children were arrested during the incident and were later released. An Israeli border policeman was also injured by a stone. Since the beginning of 2010, Israeli forces have injured 237 Palestinian children throughout the West Bank, representing some 23 percent of all Palestinian injuries, nearly the same percentage as in the equivalent period in 2009.

Once again, Mr Yankeeuxb misunderstands apartheid, although today I am pleased to see he/she has discovered how to spell the word.

Apartheid was the name given to the South African legal system of segregation, discrimination and domination based on race.

Israel and the Palestinians do NOT have an “apartheid” relationship.

The Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank are self-governing, they are NOT Israeli citizens nor do they wish to be. The have their own nationl movement and formed their own government, the PA- Palestinian Administration. have you not heard of this?

The PA has its own elections, legislative council and runs all aspects of civil society from education, Police Force, Law Courts and health care.

Mr yankeeuxb you need to get up to date, follow the news.

Unfortunately it is the PA that uses many apartheid practises ion its own people

The 'self governing' Palestians (apparently)

During the reporting period, IOF wounded two Palestinian workers in the Gaza Strip, and an Israeli human rights defender in the West Bank.

During the reporting period, IOF fired at Palestinian workers who were collecting raw construction materials near the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. As a result, two workers were wounded.

On 06 November 2010, Israeli warplanes bombarded and destroyed a tunnel at the Egyptian border near Yibna refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah.

On 10 November 2010, Israeli warplanes fired at Gaza International Airport, southeast of Rafah, targeting a number of Palestinian workers who were collecting raw construction materials.

During the reporting period, IOF used excessive force to disperse peaceful demonstrations organized in protest to Israeli settlement activities and the construction of the annexation wall. As a result, an Israeli human rights defender was wounded, and dozens of Palestinian civilians and international human rights defenders suffered from tear gas inhalation or sustained bruises.

IAF Strikes Gaza Terrorist Hideout

In a joint IDF-Shabak operation early Thursday afternoon, Israel Air Force helicopters and IDF ground forces fired at a building in central Gaza Strip in which an armed terrorist cell was hiding. A direct hit was confirmed.

The terrorists had planted explosive devices just a few hours earlier, and were planning to fire at IDF soldiers. Though fire was returned from the targeted building, no injuries were sustained amongst the IDF forces.

The exchange of fire took place near Khan Yunis, just across from the location of what used to be N’vei Dekalim, the largest community of Gush Katif.

So, Mr yankeeuxb NOT innocents, but terrorists attempting and preparing to attack Israeli civilians, this time the once again the IDF- Israel Defence Forces were able to stop them.

Another year in the life of the 'self governing Palestinians'

Nov. '10: Firing at workers near the Gaza perimiter fence

Over the past year, B'Tselem has documented eleven cases in which soldiers fired at and wounded Palestinian civilians working in areas near the perimeter fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel. In these eleven cases, the gunfire struck civilians who, because of the lack of jobs in the Strip, were compelled to earn a living by collecting building materials for recycling. The lack of jobs has grown since Operation Cast Lead and following the continuing siege on the Strip.

Brave IOF 'defending' against 'despots hellbent on genocide'

Following the disengagement, in 2005, the IOF classified the approximately 150-meter strip running from the perimeter fence along the border, which is situated inside the Strip, a no-go zone. After Operation Cast Lead, the IOF distributed leaflets stating the no-go zone had been increased to 300 meters from the fence. The leaflets state that, “Anybody who approaches endangers his life,” and that measures will be taken against persons who enter, “including by gunfire,” regardless of the person’s identity or actions. Contrary to the High Court of Justice’s ruling, in HCJ 741/05, that “special security areas” must be clearly marked, the no-go zones in the Gaza Strip are not marked in any way. A B'Tselem’s investigation revealed that some of the workers in the area have never seen such a leaflet; in any case, some of them are illiterate.

The sweeping declaration of extensive areas as no-go zones in which the IOF may open fire at any person found there, even if the person poses no threat, is unlawful. Indiscriminate firing at persons who pose no danger to security forces or to Israeli civilians breaches the central principle of international humanitarian law, the distinction between combatants and civilians.

Furthermore, more than half of the Palestinians injured in the eleven cases were shot when they were more than 300 meters from the fence, and therefore in an area outside the army’s declared no-go zone. In practice, any person working in areas along the perimeter fence, even if outside the no-go zone, risks his life.
