I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Maybe we should ask Catrina Stewart to write about this pledge of allegiance that excludes all atheists, buddhists, pagans, animists, ancestors' worshippers, polytheists? That's about half of the world's population.
After that, we could see if she still applies double standards.

The headline itself is a blatant lie. Israel is not forcing all citizens to swear an oath to the Jewish state. It is about to compel all those who want to become a citizen of Israel to swear an oath to a Jewish and democratic state. There should be absolutely no problem with this. Firstly, Israel is a Jewish state. Secondly, no nation should be forced to accept as a citizen someone who does not accept the fundamental values of that nation, indeed, someone who may well be committed to its destruction.

Incidentally, when did an Arab country last allow a Jew to become a citizen?

Joshua18: The headline itself is a blatant lie.

indeed, but it's the independent's headline

the independent's sub-editor has deliberately left out the very first word! ("new") from the opening words of catrina stewart's report …

New Israeli citizens may soon be required to swear an oath of loyalty to a "Jewish and democratic" state …

so, in clevenson's defence, it seems he read no further than the headline

Joshua18 writes Firstly, Israel is a Jewish state.
But if you are one of the 20% who are not Jewish what then?

clevenson;

For a full discussion of the issue of the status of non-Jews in a Jewish and Democratic State, read the relevant pages in this book online.

You do as the buddhists, atheists, polytheists in USA.

And why not?
If it's good enough for the UK and for the USA to demand this, then why not for Israel?

Or is is just another failed angle "clevenson" and his lefty de legitimisers are trying to find to bash Israel with?

If they do not want to swear such and oath then they need not come to Israel, or if there, and do not want to swear the oath, then in the words of the previous Australian Prime Minister , (or was it Dame Edna),"they can b***** *** out of it"!

«Je jure ou je promets solennellement: d’être fidèle à la République et canton de Genève comme à la Confédération suisse; d’en observer scrupuleusement la constitution et les lois; d’en respecter les traditions,
de justifier par mes actes et mon comportement mon adhésion à la communauté genevoise; de contribuer de tout mon pouvoir à la maintenir libre et prospère.»

That is for Switzerland. The important part is "to respect its traditions", since "tradition" include a number of things.

Add Canada to the list too. Naturalized citizens must pledge allegiance to the Queen of England too.
Ireland, Cyprus, Finland also have a pledge of allegiance to the State. Some demand that their new citizens abandon their former nationality (Spain).

Look at this crap - there are even Jewish "intellectuals" on Facebook agreeing with this outrageous rubbish:

the independent's headline is a blatant lie, contradicted by the first word of the actual article

clevenson, i see you've just logged-on, so …why did you reprint that lie? (or did you read no further than the headline?)

"then your treated as a second class citizen"

clevenson, are atheists treated like second-class citizens in USA. Are anti-monarchists treated as second-class citizens in UK?

By the way, how are Christians treated in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and many other Muslim countries? Did you ever open your mouth to criticize them? Will you support the statement that non-Muslims do not enjoy full citizenship (when they are allowed) in most Muslim countries?

add to your list to second class citizens: Palestinians in the occupied territories and Israel, plus Muslims in France

"Palestinians in the occupied territories and Israel, plus Muslims in France"

Palestinians in disputed territories are not and never were Israeli citizens, please get real!
Muslims in France? I see! So any western democracy is as bad as Israel...

We can clearly see the self-blaming bigotry behing the arguments of our local critics of Israel. Nothing is good in the West, nothing is to be criticized in Muslim countries.

Well, I feel happy not to be born in a Muslim country where 'first-class citizens' have less rights than 'second-class citizens' in Israel.

clevenson, so you're saying that it is ok for you to spread lies about israel?

happygoldfish: why is that some people think it's ok to spread lies … without any need to admit or apologise even when caught … so long as it's about israel?

clevenson: why is that some people think it's ok to spread lies
but hg. this is exactly what Israel has always done isn't it. Been economical with the truth. e.g "there are no such people as the Palestinians"
There are thousands of examples of Israel rewriting history, this is much more serious than the wording of a newspaper article.

… and no need for you even to admit that it was a lie? (nor indeed to reply at all for 8 days )
