US radio network National Public Radio has fired news analyst Juan Williams for saying on Fox News that he gets nervous if he sees Muslims on an plane.

"I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous," Williams said.

If some Hassidic Jews, had organized and carried out 9/11, and were trying to blow up planes, it might sound a bit like this...

And that's the tradegy of terrorism; it results in death and instils 'terror' into those left behind.

As horrible as it sounds on the surface, it's probably true of a lot of people if they are truly honest. It was the same when people would hear an irish accent during the height of 'The Troubles'. Irrational? - debatable, maybe. Understandable? - definitely, maybe.

I think this kind of gut reaction is very 'normal', (amongst the myriad of possible reactions in response to direct terrorism), and is best out in the open and then all sides can 'deal' with it and maybe make manoevres to assuage it without immediately accusing people of being racist.

I'm not going to start debating 'what/who is a terrorist', that's another thread. For this post I mean incidences such as 9/11, Mumbai or deliberate targetting of non-combatants. We must all remember to blame the 'terrorist' together, whatever group we are from.

Well, I can hope, maybe!

Isca,

If Hassidic Jews had been responsible for 9/11, and some were still threatening the world with further attacks on planes (a "Jewhad" on Christians and Muslims), then

(1) Do you think that Williams would have got sacked?

(2) If he had got sacked, would it have been reasonable?

Personally I would be very reassured if the entire plane was full of folks in muslim garb. I mean if you were an anti west terrorist muslim garb is exactly what you would dress in to facililite your blowing up a plane. Stands to reason koff

i cant stand freaking planes anyways they go up too high and move too fast. Canal barges are the ideal form of transport...low and slow Four months journey from Dublin to Cork is cool ( apologies to Alexander Radischev or the trustees of his estate )
