How Israel is becoming like Iran and North Korea

Israel is a fantastic country, a truly modern miracle in fact. However, it behaves in a way that does not correspond with its self-image as a strong state with a vibrant economy and democracy that boasts OECD membership, an advanced high-tech industry and nuclear-armed military. Jonathan and Avraham and their acolytes can sneer all they like, and Anthony can post inanities, but yes, a weak, fearful, pathetic Israel is behaving just like the weak, fearful, pathetic Iran and North Korea.
Israel is currently embroiled with Lebanon in a battle over who has made the world's largest plate of Hummus. This is like North Korea fighting with South Korea over who has the tallest flag pole. Does it really matter? Only a weak, fearful and, frankly, paranoid society needs to take note of that kind of "achievement".
Israel is also fighting Iran for a place in the Guinness Book of Records over who has played a chess game with the most participants. Does it really matter? The Persians invented the game after all. Loz'm Gay. Let them have the stupid accolade.
Instead of worrying about Hummus and Chess, surely Israel's leaders and their spokespeople abroad should be more concerned about the decline in Israelis' education. The children of the descendants of the people of the book rarely read books nowadays and are more concerned in who will win the Israeli version of X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. Israel is near the bottom of any international education league table. It is creating a generation of ignorami who know practically nothing about their own culture, let alone that of the wider world around them.
And the people who gave us the Prophet Amos and social justice have one of the widest social gaps between rich and poor in the OECD. And it's getting worse.
We also gave the world the Golden Rule: Ve'ahavta le'reechah kemochah. Love thy neighbour as thyself. But Israel has a growing racism problem, not only towards its Arab inhabitants and its Palestinian neighbours, but towards the non-Jewish foreigners who have sought refuge and work within its borders.

Israel doesn't use rape and torture as an instrument of state repression, it doesn't stone adulteresses to death, it doesn't hang gays from cranes or lamp posts, it doesn't ban the places of worship of minority faiths, it doesn't suppress democratic institutions or a free press, and it is not a hermit dictatorship bequeathed by a paranoic maniac to his son, and its people don't eat cats and dogs.
On yer bike!

Yvetta,

Let's see whether tsam once again re-posts this blog. By doing so, he will, of course, remove your comment and reveal his utter contempt for the freedom of expression of his fellow bloggers.

Yvetta, let's try and be objective and look at what I wrote. Israel is behaving like a pathetic Third World hellhole. It thinks nothing of entering silly games over the size of hummus plates and multi-player chess (like North Korea chides its neighbour with a game of "who can build the tallest flagpole").
It does close mosques, it lets murderers of gays get away with it (has anyone been arrested for the shooting at Bar No'ar last year? Or for the repeated attempted attacks on Gay Pride Marches?)
It is trying its hardest to suppress institutions through fear and hatred -- just look at the modus operandi of the fascist group Im Tirzu, which receives state and foreign funding and which has links to senior members of major political groups.
Yet the country of the people of the book is creating a generation of ignorami as its education system disintegrates and its results slide down every recognisable international league table.
Yes, people are hungry in Israel, perhaps not to the extent of eating their dogs, but more and more people are going without hot meals and meat. Just look at the number of charities working to help people in need with soup kitchens and cast-off clothing. This was almost unheard of before 1990. Israel is rightfully a member of the OECD, but it has one of the widest social gaps in that organisation. This is a people that gave the world social justice (read Leviticus about rules pertaining to slavery and treatment of others) and the Prophet Amos.
There is also growing racism, not only targeted at Israel's Arab population and the Palestinians next door, but also towards refugees and foreign workers. And if that isn't bad enough, there is huge racism towards Israel's Ethiopian immigrants and only recently a disgusting case of discrimination of Sephardi girls in the ultra Orthodox school system. What happened to the Golden Rule? "Ve'ahavta et re'echah kemochah" "Love thy Neighbour as Thyself"? Aren't we supposed to treat the stranger among us equally?
Israel is rapidly becoming the most Un-Jewish state imaginable. Yet its shills here will attack, abuse and damn anyone who cares enough about Israel but won't play aong with their silly, immature knee-jerk reactions. Damn them.

Tsam,

Let us assume that the above is correct. Does it equate with the Iranian and North Korean regimes?

If it doesn't, are you not once again posting "out-and-out anti Israel bile"?

- this is from the ignoramus who couldn't even name the sections of the basic book of Jewish Law. He thinks the Torah has just one binding commandment - a bit like Chabad who think tephillin (phylacteries) is everything.

Avraham, where did I say that the Torah has just one binding commandment? Go on, show me. But as it is, are we not commended to love our neighbours as ourselves? Are we not commanded to treat the Ger with at least kindness (for you were gerim (alien sojourners) in the land of Egypt (Deuteronomy 10:19 and Sefer HaHinnuch Mizvah, by Rabbi Pichas Halevi of Barcelona)? I suggest you read and reread and then read again parashat kedoshim (Vayikra 19, especially 13-18) and then read the Rashi, Rabad (Torat Kohanim 19), Yoma (23a), Arachin (16b) and Sanhedrin (73a).

tsam, the silly shenanigans regarding a plate of hummus and chess game are hardly government policy, or reflective of its leaders - and nor are these events reflective of Israel itself. Why do the actions of a few people engaged in silly record breaking entertainments represent the whole country? Unless of course you think Israelis should only engage in activities which you personally approve.

The chess game, Amber, had government approval. And one of the participants and organisers was Natan Sharansky, the head of the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency. The Hummus plate game was trumpted by Israel, through its government agencies, as a great triumph. So, Amber, where's the hatred?

Very good point you make about Reform Jews, Yvetta. It's probably because many Reform Jews don't accept as axiomatic everything that was written that they delve more into Judaism to enhance their knowledge. Orthodox Jews seem to take things for granted and some tend to have a superiority complex which blows up in their faces (mixed metaphor?) when confronted by a knowledgeable Conservative, secular or Reform Jew
