Construction freeze? It's all a bluff

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics has let the cat out of the bag about the bluff that is Israel's construction freeze in the occupied territories, according to this report in the Jerusalem Post.

he number of housing starts in the settlements rose in the fourth quarter of 2009, precisely when the government-ordered freeze on such activity should have pushed the numbers down.

Work was begun on 593 Jewish West Bank homes from October through December, a 73.3-percent jump over the first three months of 2009, when ground was broken on 342 homes, according to numbers released this week by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

The increase is even more dramatic – 84.7% – when the fourth quarter of last year is compared with the second, when work was commenced on 321 homes.

So it's all smoke and mirrors and no wonder the far-right Israeli government isn't to be trusted.

Great news, thanks moshetzarfati2.

Glad to hear Israel hasn't completely halted building for Jews while Israeli arab illegal building runs rampant.

Israeli Arab construction is deemed "illegal" because Israel makes it almost impossible for Arabs to build legally. That's what you get with apartheid.

I am in favour of a two-state solution, where there are two viable states, not one state and a bantustan.

Your usual diversive arguments do little to change the fact the only reason you complain is because it's Jews who are building houses. Bet you can guess what the official word for that is...

Israel, Fatahstan and Hamastan would be closer to reality, don't you think. I really must question your ethics if you would so readily surround your people with terrorist states that have not relinquished the desire to see them driven into the sea.

Akiva, only Jews are building houses because only Jews are allowed to build houses, in areas for only Jews, and the word for that is apartheid.

Oh dear, I think you've got a bit confused moshetzarfati2. You see, 20% of the population of Israel are Arabs, they live in the same cities and go to the same universities as Jews. They have the same opportunities, including the ability to vote and leech benefits.

Compare this to the zero Jews allowed in PA controlled areas, the ban on Jews in Jordan and the desires of the left (such as yourself) to make the rest of the Middle East free of them as well. Now that is apartheid, South Africa style.

Glad you're admitting that the only issue you have is that they are Jews, though.

Israel's Arabs, 25 per cent of the population, are not allowed to build in Jewish cities and a recent court ruling made it clear that they aren't welcome in Jewish neighbourhoods either. No new Arab towns have been built since 1948. Some Arab villages are not connected to the national water and electricity grids
Their education system is underfunded, and they are denied resources for infrastructure and employment.
Yes, they vote but their votes don't really count. As for your use of the term "leech" when referring to benefits, I wonder whether you would apply the same term to the charadim?

Israeli Arabs live in cities like Haifa (Yaffo etc), where the University has around 20-25% Arab students. They get equal opportunities and justice for all in Israel. Particularly when compared to the real apartheid in Arab states for Jews, if you are a real crusader for justice, why do you never mention that?

Also, the Chareidim leech benefits too.

Haifa and Jaffo were mixed cities before Israel came into existence. One of the main Arab areas in Haifa, Wadi Nisnas, was razed and in Jaffo they are building "Jews only" neighbourhoods. Israel's Arabs do not get equal opportunities or justice, as many jobs are barred to them and the courts tend towards the majority.
It would be good to compare like with like. Israel claims to be a democracy, its neighbours do not. In real democracies, people do not face state-sanctioned or judicial discrimination on religious or ethnic grounds. They do in Israel.

Is this moshetzarfati character really jewish? if so he needs educating about the past history of our people, has he ever considered how many lives would have been saved if the state of Israel had existed when our people were being gassed and burned in Europe. All his guff about democracy is rubbish.

Yes, I'd wager my last five pence piece that he's Jewish; crazy mixed up kid he may be, but he's good value, and despite myself and my robust Zionist views I have a soft spot for him.
