How ridiculous is this!

"By The Rivers Of Babylon" was their best song.

seems very sensible to me

the line "when we remembered zion" occurs 6 times in 28 lines, see http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/boney+m/rivers+of+babylon_20022508.html

… while "zion" may be understood by african-americans (for example) as referring to liberation, it obviously has the opposite meaning for west bank palestinians

Zion, (mt Zion), meaning Jerusalem is quoted in Psalm 137 and throughout Jewish Liturgy but is also quoted in every english Transalation of the Bible; for your benefit
see here:-
http://scripturetext.com/psalms/137-1.htm
It refers to the Jews exiled by the Babylonians "remembering Zion aka Jerusalem".
It has nothing to do with "african americans" - other than "Boney M" being African Americans.
For the Palestinians to insist that the song not be played is just further evidence of the Arabs trying to deny a Jewish connection to Jerusalem.
By resorting to such tactics really shows how desparate they are now.

Jon_i_Cohen: It has nothing to do with "african americans"

on the contrary, african-americans have always regarded "gospel songs" ("let my people go" etc) as speaking about liberation from their own plight

"by the rivers of babylon" is a modern song in the same genre

and do you seriously deny that "zion" …

happygoldfish: obviously has the opposite meaning {to liberation} for west bank palestinians

Yes, great song, but he's surely in danger of life and limb if he sings it there.
