Have you ever wondered what Jewish music sounds like on the other side of the world? Now you can find out, and you don’t have to travel beyond North London. Spanning three continents and four centuries, ‘Around the World with the Zemel Choir’ is a programme to suit all tastes and ages, incorporating polyphony by Salamone de Rossi (the great-great-grandfather of Jewish choral music) and melodies by the great synagogue composers of the nineteenth century. In one evening we will travel from Great Britain to Italy, France, Spain, the Middle East and the United States of America. Alongside Yiddish folksong and operetta, we will sing favourites by Leonard Cohen, Kurt Weill and George Gershwin, music by French composers Émile Jonas and Itai Daniel, Judaeo-Spanish ballads and a joyful psalm setting by Carlebach. This is the Zemel Choir’s first ever concert at the Radlett Centre, and we look forward to welcoming many music lovers through the doors. As ever, the choir will be conducted by its Musical Director, Benjamin Wolf, and will be joined by its resident cantor, Robert Brody. This is a concert which should appeal to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences alike.
The Zemel Choir is proud of its reputation as the UK’s leading mixed-voice Jewish choir. In recent weeks it has performed at the Holocaust Memorial Service organised by the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority, as well as hosting a special choral event in association with Yavneh College and Immanuel College. In April the choir will travel to Paris and Strasbourg, following which it will present the latest instalment of its ever-popular mini-festival, Celebrate with Song. The choir’s growing membership reflects the joy and enthusiasm of its performances, and we very much look forward to sharing that enthusiasm with the wider communities of North London. Who knows? Maybe Phileas Fogg will be in the audience.
