Arabic for Israel

Another decent and fair article from Haaretz which has appeared in their editorial and which some of the crazies on this website ought to read. I would be in favour of Arabic being taught in Jewish schools in the UK in order to broaden the experience of our pupils and prepare them thoroughly should they decide to make aliyah to a land where Arabic is intrinsic.

'The language of the state

As the Arab minority comprises about one-fifth of Israel's population and Arabic is an official language, teaching the indigenous language is not merely a practical necessity but should be part of our concept of citizenship.

The Education Ministry's decision to have the Arabic language taught in 179 elementary schools in the north of the country is both important and to be commended. As the Arab minority comprises about one-fifth of Israel's population and Arabic is an official language, teaching the indigenous language is not merely a practical necessity but should be part of our concept of citizenship.

For decades, teaching Arabic in schools was seen as a security-oriented task, granted legitimacy by the slogan "know thy enemy." Most students of the Arabic language envisioned a vocation in intelligence or security, fields which themselves set up advanced language courses to train workers exclusively for their job - not as a means of getting to know the neighbors or their culture.

This trend fell in line with the attitude that Israel, as part of the West, was obliged to help its students acclimatize themselves to Western society. Israel's being part of the Middle East, surrounded by states whose people are Arabic speakers and part of the Arab culture, was reflected only through the conflict - and even then most Israelis could not understand the Arab side.

On the practical side, not knowing Arabic results in the infringement of civil rights. For example, the branch of the National Insurance Institute in Haifa has not even one Arabic-speaking official. Arab citizens of Israel who are not fluent in Hebrew have found themselves hassled and deprived simply because nobody could explain their rights to them in their own tongue.

But the Education Ministry's decision is not enough. The Arabic teaching departments at many of the country's universities have shrunk, and some offer Middle East studies without requiring the student to learn Arabic. These facts demonstrate the accumulative damage of neglecting the language. Even the scope of the new syllabus for the north - two hours a week - is no more than a taste of what is required, and years will pass until the project spreads, if it ever does, to the entire education system.

Still, despite its limitations, this is an important decision - one which, if expanded and applied properly, could serve as a vital stage in eliminating the hostility toward the Arabic language and bringing the two populations in Israel closer together.'

Given that anti-Semitism is intrinsic to British society perhaps Mein Kampf should be taught in schools in that country.

Ever heard of links?

"Another decent and fair article from Haaretz which has appeared in their editorial and which some of the crazies"

So everyone who disagrees with you is "crazy". How very Stalinist (and illiberal) of you. It does of course mean that you believe that the vast majority of Jews are crazy. I guess they'll get over it. After all, most of them believe you to be a traitor.

How to turn a non-story into a piece of anti-Israel propaganda. "Arab citizens of Israel who are not fluent in Hebrew" says it all really. These are citizens of a State where the official language is Hebrew why do they not speak it? Why should Jewish children have to learn Arabic when the official language of the country is Hebrew? Do English children have to learn Welsh? And you call us the crazies!

Has anyone noticed after telegramsam posts one of his incendiary anti-Israel blurbs "anonymous" closes down the thread. Strange that?

Very strange. I find it perplexing too. And I don't think pointing out the demographic pickle in which israel finds itself to be incendiary or anti-israel. Anti-settler, perhaps. But not anti-israel. Nahafoch hu, as Begin used to say; if we don't want a one-state solution in a few years, it's best israel did hand over the west bank to majority rule. Those settlers who want to stay could become Palestinian citizens, the rest could be real pioneers in the Negev or Galil.

And if you want an analogy for language, you should be asking why the welsh have to learn English, not vice versa.

I have a better idea. All schools the world over should scrap all language lessons except for Hebrew, in preparation for the coming of Moshiach.

As for Telegram Sam and his "demographic issue" he's unfortunately missed the mark horribly. As it happens, Jews are in the majority in the land.

You see poor Sam here isn't really the "Kadima voting Jew" he would lead you to believe. He's far too smart to swallow the "palestinian" arab demographic figures which count Jerusalem twice (once for Israel arabs and again for "palestinian" arabs) and takes into account Hamastan Gaza. Instead he is just a lost soul seeking his moment in the spotlight, that day he catches Jonathan Hoffman at a rally with no trousers on. He is what we call, a troll. He should not be fed.

@telegramsam Your analogy is fallacious; there are more English Children than Welsh children in the UK as there are more Jewish children in Israel (including Judea and Smaria) than there are Arabs my analogy is therefore accurate. Gaza is occupied - but by Hamas. See the definition of "Occupied" Article 42 of the 1907 Hague Regulations (HR) states that a "territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army. The occupation extends only to the territory where such authority has been established and can be exercised." The only hostile army exercising control IN Gaza is that of Hamas which seized control by way of a bloody coup. The US is currently blockading Cuba and Turkey is currently blockading Armenia but no one says the US is occupying Cuba or that Turkey is occupying Armenia.
I want a one state solution now. The Arabs already have a Palestinian State it's called Jordan. In 1921, Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill severed nearly four-fifths of what was supposed to have been the Jewish Homeland — some 35,000 square miles — to create a brand new Arab entity, Transjordan. As a consolation prize for the Hejaz and Arabia (which are both now Saudi Arabia) going to the Saud family, Churchill rewarded Sherif Hussein's son Abdullah for his contribution to the war against Turkey by installing him as Transjordan's emir.

In fact, it is the most stupid decision ever taken. It would be much more appropriate to leave Arabic to the private sector and ban it totally from the public schools, except as a foreign language. Language is part of the identity of a state and Israel badly needs this to strengthen the links between the Arabic minority and the Jewish majority.
This experience will fail either as such or, if it is applied to the whole state, it will lead to greater antagonism inside Israel. Right the opposite it was supposed to do.
