I'm a bit confused about the Salafi thing. I thought the Salafists were the peaceful ones. At least that's what Ed Hussein says in his book "The Islamist".

As I recall Salafists in Kingston Upon Thames were issued death threats last year from some other sect.

Also during the swine flu outbreak the Egyptian authorities slaughtered most of the country's pigs, which were the main source of income for Copts, supposedly to drive them out. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was government involvement in this too and they're now looking for scapegoats.

Weird people, I'm afraid.

Matt, Salafi Islam is, if you will pardon the expression, a broad church. Some, especially those in Pakistan, are not militant. In North Africa and the levant, they tend to be extremists. Local traditions and circumstances...

The main sect of salafism, that of Saudi Arabia, is called "wahabism". It bacame the religious political movement that financed the terrorism on this planet.
Some of the wahabites pretend to reject jihad and want to conquer the world by preaching. Of course, this is just pretense and the net result is to finance the so-called "Islamic charities" that finance the international terror movements.
In the open, the non-jihadist criticise the jihadists. But their aim is exactly the same and their militants cross easily the porous frontier, especially since it is easy to see that it is impossible to force anyone to convert in Western countries. So the militants abandon persuasion for force.
