This drama by Nancy Harris is the final offering under the artistic directorship of Josie Rourke, who is moving to the Donmar Warehouse. It is set in the kitchen of pregnant Hazel (Kate Fleetwood), formerly a high-flying lawyer, who has a fractious relationship with her eight-year-old son. Hazel is finding motherhood no substitute for a career, so her glamorous doctor husband Richard (Mark Bazeley), who does good work in the Third World, has hired a nanny.
Director Charlotte Gwinner wrings dramatic and sexual tension out of the situation, but the unfulfilled lives of middle-class people who have it all has been and is being explored by theatres such as the National and Royal Court. And with no new insights here, maybe it is time for the trend to end.
